The Great Belt East Bridge is a steel suspension bridge that is part of a larger transportation link between Denmark and Sweden called the Great Belt Link. This link crosses a 11.2 mile wide waterway and consists of a rail line and four lane road.

Construction on this project finished in 1998, close to ten years from when it started

Combined with its efficiency of design, aesthetically pleasing look, and symbolic meaning, the Great Belt East Bridge is a wonderful example of structural art.

The Great Belt East Bridge, including east and west approaches, measures about 4.2 miles in length.

It has a main span whose length is just over one mile long, measuring about 5328 feet.

At the time of its completion in 1998, the bridge’s towers were the highest points in Denmark, reaching a height of 833 feet above sea level. (the highest point in denmark is about 566 feet above sea level.)

The deck at the main span has a depth of 4 meters, about 13 feet, and a width of 31 meters, or about 102 feet.

The bridge also has two massive concrete anchor blocks at either end
The bridge also has two massive concrete anchor blocks at either end. Each must resist 60,000 tons of cable force.

One reason why the towers are tapered at the bottom is that they are reinforced to withstand impacts with forces in excess of 67,000 tons, as the towers lie in a heavily used waterway that sees up to 20,000 vessels pass through each year.

The Great Belt East Bridge is a efficiently designed bridge
The Great Belt East Bridge is a efficiently designed bridge. Instead of using expansion joints at the towers, the bridge was built with hydraulic buffers near the anchors, and with a closed box girder, improving the stiffness and stability of the bridge and cutting down on maintenance costs.

Like the Golden gate Bridge

And the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, the great Belt bridge makes use of a small cable sag to main span ratio between 1 to 8 and 1 to 11. BY having a small cable sag ratio, more stress is put into the cables of the bridge and thus decreases the amount of stiffness and materials needed in the deck of the bridge.
