1 Friday 11/9/18 Bell Ringer: Do you think the moon rotates? Does it revolve? If so what object is it revolving around?

2 Vocabulary Thinking Charts
Make sure your name is in the diamond for each thinking chart. If you are finished staple the two pages together and turn in. I will check them this first time and then we will tape them into your spiral when I hand them back.

3 Two Sides of the Moon: Near Side and Far Side
What does the far side of the moon look like? How do you know this?

4 Which one is which? Near Side Far Side

5 Near Side of the Moon

6 Far Side of the Moon

9 Key Question If we know that when we stand anywhere on Earth we only see one side of the moon, does the moon rotate on its axis?

10 Moon Motion Investigation
Revolve your moon model (penny) around your Earth model (quarter). Your near side (the face of Lincoln) must always face the Earth. Pay attention to whether or not the moon is rotating. After observing a few revolutions answer this question in your spiral: Does the moon rotate? Give observations to support your answer.

11 Synchronous Rotation of Moon

12 What kind of motion does the moon have in space?
Rotates on its axis once in 27.3 Earth days Revolves around the Earth once in 27.3 Earth days Synchronized Rotation = length of time for 1 rotation is equal to length of time for 1 revolution. Must be synchronized for us to only see one side of the Moon from Earth.

13 Exit Ticket: Is it a Model?
Read the list of things that students do in science class. Check off the things that are examples of using a model. Explain your thinking…I did give you much room below so it is okay to right it on the right side white space. Turn in when you are finished.

14 How do we know the length of rotation and revolution is 27
How do we know the length of rotation and revolution is 27.3 Earth days?

16 Thursday 5/5/16 Notebook Entry: Enrico and Leah live in opposite hemispheres. Enrico lives in Santiago, Chile, which is in the Southern Hemisphere. Leah lives in New York City which is in the Northern Hemisphere. They both gazed at the Moon on the same evening. Enrico noticed there was a full Moon when he looked up. What do you predict Leah saw when she looked up into the sky from her location? A – New Moon B- Crescent Moon C- Half Moon D – Gibbous Moon E- Full Moon Provide an explanation for your answer. How did you decide what the Moon would look like in opposite hemispheres?

17 Earth and Moon in motion

18 What causes the moon to look different each night?
rises in the East and sets in the West due to Earth’s rotation rises at different times due to where moon is in its orbit half of the moon is always illuminated by the sun. we are only able to see certain portions of the illuminated half So the moon has a different look throughout its orbit The Earth’s Moon What cause moonlight? What kind of motion does the moon have? What causes the moon to look different each night?
