Lithification: Physical & chemical processes that transform sediments into sedimentary rocks. Lithify in Greek means “turn to stone”.

10. Lithification Process
1. Most sediments are deposited in low areas (valleys, ocean basins).
2. As more sediment is deposited in an area, the bottom layers are subjected to increasing pressure & temperature
3. These conditions cause lithification

11. 2 Steps in Litification
Compaction: weight of overlying sediment forces the sediment grains closer together.
Cementation: Mineral growth “glues” sediment grains together to form solid rock.
