1 GLOBAL Solar & Water Initiative
Mainstreaming the use of solar PV technology in WASH projects 2.5 people – 2 years - Mostly water pumping (treatment) – PV stand alone or hybrid (grid, genset, windmill) –– look into other uses for excess energy could be innovative but not the project itself - THIS IS NOT AN INNOVATION (programmes from the ‘70s )

2 Solar Energy in Water projects: 4 reasons for renewed interest
SOLAR PV PRICES CRASHING HIGH, CONSTANT SOLAR RADIATION An estimated 147 gigawatts (GW) of renewable power capacity was added in 2015, the largest annual increase ever, despite low fuel prices (partly because lowest ever prices for renew energy technology, growing demand in developing and emerging markets and environmental concerns, and better access to finance, source Ren report) SOLAR PRIVATE SECTOR BOOMING IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES ROBUST & RELIABLE TECHNOLOGY 2

3 Current challenges: Insufficient technical expertise
Panel theft/ vandalism - Measures have to be put in place Availability of technicians and spare parts normally only at capital level. Global lack of solar evaluations, need of building up stronger evidence Management models for host populations: transitioning to a much more spaced use of water fees, since it might take years for breakdowns to happen & potential cost of repairs is higher than for other systems

2 full time solar experts devoted for the project Working as resource people for the entire WaSH Sector (NGO, UN, private companies, donors, universities …) Back up Global WaSH Cluster Solar Working – Rural Water Supply Network Part of the SAFE (Safe Access to Fuel and Energy)

5 Solar Initiatives: 6 pillars
Share experiences and information on good practices and coordinate actions Commission research and build evidence Provide technical tools, guidance documents, and support for implementation and monitoring Improve technical expertise through on-line, on-site training, CV development in existing training institutions Raise awareness and Advocate to non-technical management to include solar in strategic documents and country plans Mobilize resources Strategy: to propose a project not focused on implementation but focused on activities aiming to put down barriers that stand on the way to wider adoption. 2 main issues came up, 1) It has to be an umbrella project – build up on the enthusiasm (no one say no to Solar) 2) It needs focus (small doable actions with simple and clear objectives) 3) Whatever material is produced it has to be based mostly on real practical field experience

CLIMATE & HYDROGEOLOGY All boreholes analyzed conducive to be solarised SOLAR PRICES Competitive prices of solar equipment in Nigeria market NATIONAL TECHNICAL EXPERTISE Available in the Private Sector at Lagos level. INVESTMENT IN SOLAR Solar pumping not new in Nigeria, projects since 2006 RELIABILITY OF TECHNOLOGY Presence of high quality products in Nigerian market CURRENT CONTEXTUAL SITUATION Erratic fuel supply, absence of grid, difficult access (rain, insecurity) SPHERE inclusion of SWP + GWC website

Mention Private sector and quality products, 21 borehole analyzed for technical recommendation , 15 economic analysis (7 of them with Breakeven<1 year)
