Earth’s Movement Earth, and all the other planets, orbit around the Sun. Orbit means to move in a path around an object. As the planets orbit, they are also rotating, or turning on their axis. An axis is a made-up line through the middle of an object. Earth’s axis goes through the North and South Poles. © Erin Kathryn 2016

Daytime In the morning, the Sun rises and shines in the East.
This is when the part of Earth where you live faces the Sun. During this time, it is day. The other side of the Earth is experiencing nighttime. © Erin Kathryn 2016

Nighttime As Earth keeps rotating, where you live starts to turn away from the Sun. The Sun sets, or goes down. Without receiving the Sun’s light, it gets dark out. Night begins on your side of the Earth. During this time, the other side of the Earth is experiencing daytime. © Erin Kathryn 2016

Sunrise & Sunset The Sun shines and rises in the East.
As the Earth turns, the Sun moves higher in the sky. The Sun is highest at noon. As Earth continues to rotate and turn, the Sun seems to move as it sets in the West. © Erin Kathryn 2016
7
Shadows As Earth is rotating, the Sun’s place in the sky changes.
As a result, the Sun’s rays hit Earth different ways at different times throughout the day. This makes shadows change, too. © Erin Kathryn 2016

Shadows Throughout The Day
Early Morning Noon Late Afternoon The Sun in low in the sky in the morning, so the shadows are long. The Sun is high in the sky at noon, so the shadows are short. The Sun is low in the sky in the evening, so the shadows are long. © Erin Kathryn 2016
