2 Introduction to media processes and technical skills
Unit 1 Introduction to media processes and technical skills Level: 3 Credit value: 12 Unit Aim: To provide the student with an introduction to a range of processes and skills used in creative media production and technology and to the particular characteristics and methods of communication within the media sector. Assessment Criteria The student can: 1.1 Apply understanding of a range of processes to support media activities. 1.2 Apply media processes and skills safely and appropriately. 2.2 Critically compare a range of communication methods used to convey meaning in creative media production. Learning Outcomes The student will: 1. Understand processes and technical skills used in creative media production. 2. Understand the characteristics and methods of communication within a media context.

3 Unit 2: Introduction to design and research skills in creative media production
Level: 3 Unit Aim: To provide the student with an introduction to a range of design and research activities and related skills appropriate to the support of creative media production. The unit will also develop an understanding of the vital role that design and research play in informing and developing ideas. Assessment Criteria The candidate can: 1.1 Critically compare a range of research tools, methods and skills. 2.1 Critically compare a range of primary and secondary research sources. 3.1 Apply design and research tools, methods and skills to record and interpret information and develop ideas for creative production. 3.2 Evaluate the effectiveness of design and research tools methods and skills to develop ideas for creative production. Learning Outcomes The candidate will: 1. Understand design and research tools, methods and skills used in creative media production. 2. Understand primary and secondary research sources. 3. Be able to use design and research tools, methods and skills to inform ideas for creative media production

4 Unit 3: Introduction to professional practice in creative media production
Level: 3 Unit Aim: To provide the student with an introduction to the diversity of roles, responsibilities, employment and progression opportunities available within the sector. It will introduce the student to professional working practices and give an understanding of the skills needed for a career in creative media technology and production. Learning Outcomes The candidate will: 1. Understand progression opportunities within the creative media sector. 2. Understand the skills needed to pursue a career in the creative media sector. 3. Be able to carry out roles and responsibilities consistent with professional practice. Assessment Criteria The candidate can: 1.1 Locate, access and use information to support own development. 2.1 Critically evaluate a range of working practices and methods. 2.2 Apply knowledge of working practices to support own development. 3.1 Organise self and work to meet deadlines and targets. 3.2 Demonstrate consideration and professionalism in working with others.

5 Unit 4: Critical and contextual awareness in creative media production
Level: 3 Unit Aim: To provide the student with an introduction to historical and contemporary contexts and perspectives influencing the development of ideas and technology within creative media production. Assessment Criteria The student can: 1.1 Compare a range of critical perspectives that influence the analysis of creative media production activities. 1.2 Apply knowledge of critical perspectives to the analysis of a range of creative media 1.3 Apply knowledge and understanding of critical perspectives to support own practice. 2.1 Critically compare a range of contexts within which creative media technology and production are situated. 2.2 Apply an understanding of a range of contextual parameters to support own creative development. Learning Outcomes The student will: 1. Understand critical perspectives that influence the analysis of creative media production activities. 2. Understand the contexts within which creative media technology and production are positioned

6 Monday Complete ALL reflective logs Choose three pieces of writing that you would like to develop. You can choose from non-fiction, fiction or poetry. This may be a piece you have already begun or a new piece of writing. At least one non-fiction and one fiction. You can choose two non fiction and one fiction, or one non fiction and two non fiction BUT Each piece must be unique in some way i.e. different genre, different market audience, different magazine, different newspaper, different form, different theme. AND INCLUDE MUTIMEDIA PRODUCTION: RADIO, INTERACTIVE WEBPAGE. VERSION OF YOUR WORK E.G. SPOKEN WORD POEM, RADIO FEATURE OF REVIEW, ARTICLE, SCENE FROM FICTIONAL PIECES For this you can collaborate with others e.g. actors, film crew etc.

7 The Presentation of the work should like this:
Introduce your chosen work. Explain what each piece aimed to achieve Explore the development and techniques/skills used. Show comparison between two other works.

8 How to achieve the highest grades:
Answer ALL the questions on this PowerPoint and the sheet provided to help you with the project: show the skills, the published work that has helped the development and understanding of the skills, your demonstration of the skills and the evaluation. This will help you throughout the course achieve the highest grades.

9 Introduction: Write about the writing process, the specific skills demonstrated and the examples that have influenced your work. Refer to individual skills sessions and further reading. You should also mention the specific fields of career that the skills will be used: journalism, copywriting, poetry, short story and novel writing, scriptwriting, memoir etc. You should also talk about any pre-production research you have done (this includes the skills sessions with me). Unit 1 and Unit2 Identifying the Skills and research existing examples Production: Demonstrating the process and technical skills in your writing and creative ideas: the piece of fiction, non-fiction or poetry that you have chosen to develop. Unit 1 (1.1, 1.2) Unit 3 (2.2, 3.1,3.2) Evaluation: The process; the strengths and areas still needing development plus comparisons to existing published work. Your evaluation/analysis will identify the differences IN ALL YOUR WORK clearly. Unit 4 Critically examine and evaluate

10 Introduction Look back at all the skills sessions and think about the sessions that you feel have enhanced your understanding of what a writer does to achieve effective writing. Plan the work you would like to explore further by looking at the session/s, the industry examples, the exercises the definition of the skills and explain the processes you will take to develop your work. What do you hope to achieve: aims, ideas, skills needed, planning and preparation, choices and decisions you may need to make along the way (refer to these in your evaluation. Give each piece a work an introduction and title. You may need to write a short synopsis, a mind-map, bullet point or beat sheet, a structure to help with the writing How do other writers explore, identify, make decisions? What else do you need to do before you begin writing? Where and when is this used in the industry? Give examples!

11 Production: demonstrating the skills:
Experiment! Create Have fun and challenge yourself. Draft! Proofread! Edit! Craft! Please show the drafting process – and reflect on this in the evaluation section Make sure you use a wide selection of the writing skills from all the sessions for the three pieces I do not expect them to be perfect, but I do expect you o show off as many of the skills you have learnt.

12 EVALUATING Answer ALL the questions on this sheet to help you with the project: show the skills, the published work that has helped the development and understanding of the skills, your demonstration of the skills and the evaluation. This will help you throughout the course achieve the highest grades. Evaluate your writing answering the following questions: Unit Comment on how does the final draft match your original idea? What methods and techniques have you used to create your final writing (support your answers with some screen grabs, extracts, images, quotes and references)? Unit 1: Skills

17 Work presentation On Tuesday and Wednesday 18th (TBC) you will show your work to the class and talk through your intentions and realization of each piece. Prepare to talk through the following: Introduce your chosen work. Explain what each piece aimed to achieve Explore the development and techniques/skills used. Compare and contrast all three works by showing me the differences and similarities with regards to the skills and techniques used. i.e. there are many skills that are relevant to all the written pieces
