Earth’s Tides (Page 67) E.Q. – What causes the Earth’s oceans to rise and fall throughout the day?

LOW TIDE HIGH TIDE

LOW TIDE

Earth’s Tides What is a tide? The periodic rising and lowering of the Earth’s oceans and other large bodies of water.

How do tides occur?

1 - The Moon and the Sun’s gravitational force (gravity) pulls on the Earth.

2 – This causes the oceans facing the Moon to bulge, raising the water level (a high tide)

3 - The Moon is also pulling on the Earth’s lands, so the opposite side of Earth also has high tide.

4 - In between the two high tides are the low tides.

5 - As the Earth rotates, each location on Earth will have 2 high tides and 2 low tides each day, about 6 hours apart.

Where do high tides occur?

On the Earth directly facing the Moon.

Think About It: The Moon is 240,000 miles away from the Earth. What prediction can you make about the tides if the distance between the Earth and Moon were to decrease?

There are 2 types of High Tides:

*Spring Tide - highest high tide (Earth, Moon, and Sun are lined up – Full Moon or New Moon)

*Neap Tide – lower high tide (Earth, Moon, and Sun form a 90° angle – First Quarter or Third Quarter Moon)

Think about it: If the Moon had oceans would there be tides on the Moon similar to what we experience on Earth? Explain.

Conclusion “If a hurricane was to pass through Jacksonville, during which Moon phase would we experience the most damage?” Draw a diagram of the Earth, Moon, and Sun’s positions to help explain your answer. *1 paragraph
