1 PHOTOSYNTHESIS

2 What is Photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is how plants (and some bacteria) use the energy of the sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and high-energy carbohydrates. It is the process of CREATING a usable energy source from sunlight that other organisms may consume.

3 2. All of our food comes directly or indirectly from photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis is vital to life for two reasons: 1. The oxygen in the air comes from photosynthesis. The plants continue to replenish the oxygen in the air. 2. All of our food comes directly or indirectly from photosynthesis.

4 Here is the equation for photosynthesis:
6CO2 + 6H2O C6H12O6 + 6O2 Carbon Dioxide + Water Sugar + Oxygen glucose Light waste Light

5 How Can Plants Do It? Plants have pigments that allow them to take in certain wavelengths. *found in chloroplasts Chloroplasts hold chlorophyll, a pigment that takes in light that can be turned into energy. There is one color of light that plants do not take in very well: green.

6 What controls photosynthesis?
Intensity of light Water Temperature

7 Here is a quick video about Photosynthesis
Here is a quick video about Photosynthesis. Make sure you pay attention and take brief notes. You will be tested on this!

8 Respiration Chemical reaction opposite of photosynthesis.
Occurs in animals (and plants) Taking glucose and oxygen and getting energy and carbon dioxide and water.

9 Cellular Respiration Harvesting Chemical Energy
C6H12O6 + 6O2 6H2O + 6CO2 + Energy Cellular Respiration Harvesting Chemical Energy

10 All the energy in all the food you eat can be traced back to sunlight
If you exercise too hard, your muscles shut down from a lack of oxygen

11 FEELING THE “BURN” When you exercise
Muscles need energy in order to perform work Your cells use oxygen to release energy from the sugar glucose

12 Quick Video Clip on Respiration
Please take notes Pay attention! This will be on a test! Or two!!
