3 India’s Early Civilizations
The Land of India India is a subcontinent even though it is a part of Asia. The Himalayan Mountains separate India from the rest of the continent

4 Vocabulary Subcontinent- Large land mass that is part of a continent but is distinct and separate from it. Himalayan Mountains- Tallest and largest mountains in the world

5 Land of India There are 5 countries that make up the Indian subcontinent: India Pakistan Nepal Bhutan Bangladesh

6 Land of India India has 2 fertile river Valleys Ganges river-
The Ganges is 1557 miles long

7 Land of India The river starts in an ice cave on the southern slopes of the Himalayas, some 10,300 feet (3,140 meters) above sea level

8 Land of India It flows eastward and empties into the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. Its mouths forms a vast delta. Sheer volume of waste - estimated at nearly 1 billion litres per day - of mostly untreated raw sewage Also, inadequate cremation procedures contributes to a large number of partially burnt or unburnt corpses floating down the Ganga, not to mention livestock corpses

9 Land of India 2. Indus River- Stretches across present day India, Pakistan, and Nepal empties into the Arabian Sea The total length of the river is 1,980 mi and it is Pakistan's longest river.

10 Land of India The river system is fed mainly by snow and glaciers of the Himalayas, annual flooding attributed to intense monsoon rainfall

11 Land of India Monsoons are an in an important part of the Indian Climate Monsoons- winds that blow one direction in the winter and the opposite direction in the summer.

12 Land of India If Monsoon rains are good in the summer, farmers celebrate their arrival

India’s early civilization began around 3000 BC in the Indus river Valley. More than 1,000 villages were part of the civilization They came from 2 major cities Harappa and Mohenja-Daro

Had wide Streets and walls surrounding each neighborhood Had a population of about 35,000 The city was a fortress built on a brick platform Houses were built from brick

Conveniences Indoor bathrooms Sewer drainage under the city Garbage chutes Granaries to store food.

17 India’s Early civilization
Most Harappans were farmers Grew Rice, Barley peas and cotton City dwellers made bronze tools and cotton cloth. Likely the Harappans began trading with the Mesopotamians in 2300 BC
