What are mutual funds? Open-ended, long-term investments that are professionally managed and consist of a variety of investment instruments. Explain the concept of mutual funds to students and that mutual fund portfolios consist of a variety of stocks, bonds, and money markets. Define stock as an instrument that signifies an ownership position in a corporation and represents a claim on its proportional share in the corporation’s assets and profits. Define bonds as interest bearing certificates used as a means for the government or business to raise money. The borrower promises to repay the bondholder the debt and a specified amount of interest at maturity. 21 My Money…My Mix Introduce the My Money…My Mix game to the students. Tell students the premise of the game is to create a portfolio and watch how the investments perform over time. The goal is to retire after 50 years with the most money in the investment portfolio. Use the Instruction sheet to get more details and help facilitate the game.

22 Go over the Mutual Fund Mix Options sheet and explain that the sheet provides the different investment mixes they can choose from. They will use this sheet to determine their initial investment mix and can change investment mixes three times during the game.
