1 Volcanoes and Plate Tectonics Chapter 6.1 Notes

2 Volcanoes and Tectonic Plates

3 What is a volcano? What is the difference between magma and lava? A volcano is a weak spot in the crust where molten material, or magma, comes to the surface. Magma – below ground Lava – above ground Volcano video clip

4 World Map of Volcanoes

5 Where do volcanoes rise above the water?
Describe how divergent plate boundaries create volcanoes? Location of Volcanoes Divergent boundaries (mid ocean ridge). Volcanoes rise above the water in a few places. Example: Iceland Divergent Boundary Animation

6 What creates volcanoes on convergent plate boundaries?
What creates an island arc? Convergent boundaries (subduction zones) O.C. – C.C. animation Subduction and Eruption of Volcanoes Video 1. Oceanic-Continental When the more dense oceanic crust subducts under the continental crust creating a volcano along the edge of a continent. 2. Oceanic-Oceanic The more dense crust subducts and melts creating volcanoes in the water called island arcs.

7 Plate Tectonics and Magma Generation
To view this animation, click “View” and then “Slide Show” on the top navigation bar.

8 Hot Spot Volcanoes -A hot spot is an area where magma from deep within the mantle melts through the crust like a blow torch. Hot Spots – The formation of the Hawaiian Islands video What creates a hot spot? Give an example of islands created by a hot spot.

9 Tectonic Settings and Volcanic Activity
To view this animation, click “View” and then “Slide Show” on the top navigation bar.

10 Where is the ring of fire located? What is the ring of fire?
-The ring of fire is a belt of volcanoes that is formed around the rim of the Pacific Ocean. The Ring of Fire Video Active Volcanoes website
