1 Srimad Bhagavatam Canto Eight Chapters 2-4 Gajendra Moksa
Anjana Suta Academy www,JayaRama.us rev

2 S.B. 8.1 Chapter Summary Tāmasa, the brother of the third Manu, was the fourth Manu . . During his reign Harimedhā begot a son named Hari in the womb of his wife Hariṇī. This Hari, an incarnation of God, saved the devotee Gajendra. This incident is described as gajendra-mokṣaṇa. At the end of this chapter, Parīkṣit Mahārāja particularly asks about this incident.

3 1-19 – Describe Trikuta Mtn. 20-26 – Gajendra Enters Lake
CHAPTER TWO Verse Groupings 1-19 – Describe Trikuta Mtn. 20-26 – Gajendra Enters Lake 27-30 – Gaj. And Croco. Fight. 31-33 – Gaj. Evaluates situation and concludes.

4 Chapter Two How many verses in the chapter? What verses are there for review, refreshing our memorization? We see om ajnana timirandhaysya. We should know this and the entire Mangala-archanam from the front of the BG by memory. What kind of person in the modern world would be like Gaj.? How does this Module help us preach to him or the Gaj. Within us. Is the environment is very important in preaching e.g. Trikuta Mt., Crocodile?

5 CHAPTER THREE Verse Groupings 1-29 – Gaj. Prays: Qualities of Lord , 25-begs Liberation – Lord Visnu appears. Pulls Gaj., Cuts Croco., Gaj. Adores.

6 In general, we remind ourselves that even in one-hundred years it is impossible to study these books, these prayers, completely, and that no one can take every thing that the spiritual master is offering. So, we collect our own Study Notes and from them generate these Study Guides. We expect others to enhance them over the years, and even centuries, of studying these Bhakti-vedanta Purports.

7 Do not neglect Chanting the Prayers just to stimulate your mind and senses, even without comprehension, what to speaking of developing your Sanskrit abilities. Take notes for your Personal Index. Read the Verses and Purports with attention, comprehension and even love. Unless you are a B’cari on the level of Bh. Siddhanta you won’t be able to commit the entire purports to memory in your head or Index, but you can let them continually refine the intelligence in your heart.

8 Ask yourself, “Is this new information. ”
Ask yourself, “Is this new information?”. You will most likely say, “No, we heard this since Isopanisad! Yet, here is a new detail to add to this concept. Another way to look at it for preaching, fighting The Witch in my own life.”

9 In specific, we see that the prayers rock between two meters.
8.3.1 is a preface talking about the prayer’s origin. At Bhakti-vedanta we should know the Srngara-arati and Nrsmha-prayers word for word. What does “Yatate ca tato bhūyaḥ saṁsiddhau kuru-nandana” mean? Then we started to put the qualities of the Lord glorified by Gajendra into list order. This allows easier contemplation. Then we can clearly see what qualities are selected for discussion in the puport.

10 SB 8.3.2 The King of the elephants, Gajendra, said: I offer my respectful obeisances unto the Supreme Person, Vāsudeva [oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya]. Because of Him this material body acts due to the presence of spirit, and therefore He is the root cause of everyone. He is worshipable for such exalted persons as Brahmā and Śiva, and He has entered the heart of every living being. Let me meditate upon Him. In the purport SP does not just illuminate point “1.” but goes beyond it. How?

11 SB 8.3.3 The Supreme Godhead is the supreme platform on which everything rests, the ingredient by which everything has been produced, and the person who has created and is the only cause of this cosmic manifestation. Nonetheless, He is different from the cause and the result. I surrender unto Him, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is self-sufficient in everything.

12 Not only does He enliven all bodies but he enlivens all matter
Not only does He enliven all bodies but he enlivens all matter. Yet, is there any matter in the universe that is not a body? SB Same idea as previous verse? SB Previous verse said, “sometimes renders it invisible” and now Gaj. Continues to expand that. SB Same ideas, no? K is the ultimate cause but He cannot be known. Purport:  “A similar understanding was expressed by Kuntīdevī.” SB Demigods want to see him but can’t, and also above them want to see Him. SP expands that the Sannyasis and Jnanis are qualified to become devotees and then what about those who do?

13 SB 8.3.8-9 He is unknowable and unrelated to this world by personal desire, but He comes to ______?
“When the Lord comes to this material world, He does not become a product of matter.” SB I offer my respectful obeisances unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the self-effulgent Supersoul, who is the witness in everyone’s heart, who enlightens the individual soul and who cannot be reached by exercises of the mind, words or consciousness.

14 SB The Supreme Personality of Godhead is realized by [how to realize the unknowable] pure devotees who act in the transcendental existence of bhakti-yoga. He is the bestower of uncontaminated happiness and is the master of the transcendental world. Therefore I offer my respect unto Him.

15 SB I offer my respectful obeisances to Lord Vāsudeva, who is all-pervading, to the Lord’s fierce form as Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, to the Lord’s form as an animal [Lord Varāhadeva], to Lord Dattātreya, who preached impersonalism, to Lord Buddha, and to all the other incarnations. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the Lord, who has no material qualities but

16 who accepts the three qualities goodness, passion and ignorance within this material world. I also offer my respectful obeisances unto the impersonal Brahman effulgence.

17 Your turn! From here on we will just read the purports and develop our Study Notes, head notes and heart notes.

18 1-2 – The ambience, demigods. 3-5 – Reactions for Crocodile.
CHAPTER FOUR Verse Groupings 1-2 – The ambience, demigods. 3-5 – Reactions for Crocodile. 6-13 – Reactions for Gajendra, history. 14-15 – Sruti phal. 16-26 – Declaration and departure of Lord.

19 Notable Details - Questions
8.4.1, 3-4 – Who was Crocodile in his last life? How should we take it if we are cursed by devotees in ISKCON? 6 - Who was Elephant in his last life? What was the result of Lord Visnu’s touching Gajendra? How can we get the same result now?

20 13 – SB 10. 14. 8, tat te ’nukampāṁ susamīkṣamāṇo. Refesh it
13 – SB , tat te ’nukampāṁ susamīkṣamāṇo. Refesh it. Read the purport. How is Gajendra and example of this? “Thus he comes down to open hospitals and educational institutions, feed poor men and perform similar materialistic activities, which the impersonalist thinks are more precious than serving the Supreme Personality of Godhead.”

21 15 – Why does Guru have bad dreams?
17-24 – Lord inspires us to chant these prayers daily, but He also inspires us to chant so many other prayers. Do you know a citation from NOD that might resolve this? Hint: Find: “select some of these prayers”

22 Thank You Hare Krsna
