2 Definition “Hate or bias crimes are defined by Congress as actions where the defendant’s conduct was motivated by hatred, bias, or prejudice directed toward an individual or group solely because of his or her perceived race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.” Gender, Gender Identity, Sexual Orientation, & Disability.

4 Example 14 year old boy shot and killed a 15 year old boy for being gay. King was known as the boy to wear makeup, nail polish, and high heeled boots to school. Brandon will have a maximum sentence of 50 years to life for first degree murder and hate crime
