1 The Father of Geometry Brit Caswell
Euclid The Father of Geometry Brit Caswell

2 Euclid’s Life Birth/death dates unknown Lived in Alexandria
Lived in times of Ptolomy I (367BC - 283BC) Platonic school of thought Wrote the Elements

3 Other works Only FIVE pieces of Euclid’s original works have survived today “Data”, which discusses information given in Geometry “On Divisions of Figures”, which looks at areas of figure “Catoptrics”, which looks at the theory of mirrors “Phaenomena”, which talks about spherical astronomy “Optics”, which looks at perspective

4 Lost Works Most of Euclid’s work has been lost. However, these works have been referred to by other mathematicians. Conics Porisms, which is an extension of conics Pseudaria, the Book of Fallacies, discusses errors in logic Surface Loci, believed to be about quadric surfaces Mechanics, has several books discussing real items, such as the physics of levers

5 The Elements What is a proof?
The elements structured mathematics for 23 centuries Mostly geometry, some number theory There are 5 postulates, however only the first 4 have been proven The first 28 propositions in the Elements do not use the parallel postulate In 1823, Janos Bolyai and Nicolai Lobachevsky each discovered other forms of geometry in which the 5th postulate did not hold
