2 Our Goals Objectives Essential Questions
SWBAT: Define “colonialism,” “mercantilism” and Triangular trade to explain how European rulers controlled distance economies as well as to explain how Europeans competed with one another one a global scale. Where did colonial powers build their empires? How did the experience of colonialism differ in the various colonies that were established?

3 Effects of European Exploration
Wealth: European nations became extremely wealthy from trade with Americas nationalism: support of one’s country’s power & wealth (in comparison to other countries)

growth of capitalism: econ. system that allows for private ownership of businesses; supply & demand regulate the prices of goods, not the government merchants trade and invest money in businesses in order to make a profit “Laissez-faire” = hands off! Let market forces act on the economy as they will – if the value of a good or commodity goes up, let it be

Europeans did not simply explore & trade, they began to colonize the Americas, SE Asia, & ultimately Africa Colonialism: the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically.

Much of the entire colonization system based upon economic theory known as mercantilism: a nation’s power comes from creating a “favorable balance of trade” Favorable balance = export more than they import need colonies for raw materials

step 1: mother country takes raw materials step 2: raw materials manufactured in mother country step 3: sell goods back to colony for a profit

9 What were the effects of European exploration?
RESULTS: Colonies not allowed to manufacture or produced finished goods; colonial “mother countries” become very wealthy “Triangle Trade”: System of trading raw materials, finished goods, and people in order to meet the demands of mercantilism

10 Mercantilism Analysis
Think-Pair-Share: How does the policy of mercantilism lead to the creation of coerced labor systems in the colonies first with Native Americans and ultimately with Africans? Complete the analysis questions (Map, Chart, #3, #4). Complete the extension activity when finished!
