1 Psychology Life Hack of the Week
Can you spot a fake smile? A genuine smile involves deeper crinkles around the eyes (Wiseman).

2 Can you remember the ethical issues and guidelines?
R…………… to w………………….. P…………………….. from h………… C…………………………………….. P…………………………… All participants should be b………… before a study and thoroughly d…………………………afterwards

3 You are a member of an ethics committee
You are a member of an ethics committee. Read the following research proposal: Some researchers would like to investigate why men visit sex workers. They intend to observe men who collect a sex worker in their car and record their license plate number. In conjunction with the police and DVLA, the researchers will find the address of these men and visit them to conduct a semi-structured interview about their use of sex workers. Explain the ethical issues with this study and how they might be dealt with. Should the study take place – would the benefits of what is learned from the research outweigh the costs to individual participants? Challenge: Explain how you could redesign the study to make it more ethical.

4 Quick quiz

5 Lesson 5: Experimental Methods Research Practical
- Planning and Conducting Your Study All students will formulate a plan for the research practical. All students will conduct a pilot study in preparation for the research practical. All students should draft a procedure section for their research practical report. All students could draft a method section for their research practical report.

6 Craik and Lockhart’s Theory of Memory: ‘Levels of Processing’
The way you think about information affects recall = visual features e.g. upper or lower case = the sound of a word Depth of processing = the meaning of a word/links to existing knowledge The deeper the processing, the better the word is remembered.

7 Cup Boat Door Large Pig Cold happy Hair Dirty Cook Bad Man
“Is this in upper case letters?” “Does this word rhyme with …?” “Does this word fit into the sentence …” Cup Boat Door Large Pig Cold happy Hair Dirty Cook Bad Man

8 Our Research Practical
Read about our experimental methods research practical on page 4 of the handout. Group Task: Discuss the proposed study and note down the following: The aim of the study IV and DV Hypothesis – would this be directional or non-directional? Null hypothesis The experimental design to be used Controls? Ethical issues?

9 Planning: Aims, IV, DV and Hypotheses
Aim: To investigate the effect of imagery on memory . IV: Stimulus list with words only vs list with words and related images. DV: Number of words correctly recalled. Hypothesis: The group of participants shown words and corresponding images will recall more words than participants shown words only. Null hypothesis: There will be no difference in the number of words recalled by participants shown words and corresponding images and participants shown words only.

10 Planning: Design, Control and Ethics
Design: Independent groups (Group A: words; Group B: words and images). + No order effects; fewer demand characteristics X Participant variables; need to recruit more participants. Controls: Standardised instructions (for Group A and Group B) – see page 5 of workbook. Ethics: Informed consent, right to withdraw, debrief, confidentiality.

11 Introduce yourself, the study and how long it will take.
Confidentiality and privacy Right to withdraw Page 17 & 18 of workbook Consent

12 Workbook: Page 16

13 What You Need to Do For next week’s research methods lesson:
Recruit and test two participants, one for condition A (words only) and one for condition B (words and images): Brief each participant and gain their consent – use forms on page 17 and 18 of workbook. Use standardised instructions – page 5. Stimulus lists for group A – page 6-10; group B – page Present each list for approx. 3 seconds with 5 second interval between lists. Participants write down words recalled at end. Debrief participants and record results – page 16. See page 4 of Lesson 5 handout

14 Pilot Study A small-scale trial run of main study.
Used to identify and rectify any problems with method/design, materials, etc. Potentially saves time and money. Working in pairs/threes, pilot your study. Take it in turns to administer the instructions, stimulus list and debrief. Make a note of anything you think needs to change before you embark on the study.

15 Sections of Research Report
The method section has a number of subsections – see page 5 of the lesson 5 handout. One of these subsections is the procedure – someone else should be able to replicate your study by the information you provide here. Abstract Introduction Method Results Discussion References Plan and draft the procedure subsection for our research practical. Finished? Have a go at drafting the rest of the method section.

16 Procedure How were participants recruited? How were participants briefed? How were the standardised instructions given? How were the participants tested? For how long? How was data recorded? Was there a pilot study and were any changes made as a result?

17 Plenary: Psychology Hangman and/or Pictionary
Work in pairs/small groups: Use key terms from research methods or Approaches to Psychology. Hangman: On your whiteboard, indicate the number of letters the term has. Your partner/the rest of the group has to guess the correct term before the hangman is fully drawn. Pictionary: Draw the term – whoever guesses correctly, wins the point.
