1 Mexican collaboration networks in the international and regional arenas
JM Russell, MJ Madera-Jaramillo, Y Hérnandez-García, S Ainsworth Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM)

2 Background Increased global collaboration in science, particularly important for developing countries. Increased visibility associated with international collaboration. Idea that papers in international collaboration are published in international journals. Scarcity of databases covering publications in national journals. Migration of records from two LA databases, Periódica and Clase, in Aleph system to form the CLAPER database in PostgreSQL

3 Las fuentes de información latinoamericana
Periódica Clase Latindex

4 Objective Visualize international collaboration (IC) networks of Mexican scientists when publishing in the mainstream literature from and compare these with those found through an analysis of Latin American journals.

5 Method and Data WoS (SCI, SSCI, AHCI) 8,700 journals: removed duplicate records and those from LA journals (11% of the total) ► 37,526 papers CLAPER approx. 3,000 LA journals in sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities ► 28,954 papers (in Latindex catalogue journals) Institutions: Both databases include the institutional affiliations of all authors which allowed us to determine IC at three levels: Level 1: solely intra-regional Level 2: solely extra-regional Level 3: intra/extra-regional

6 Method and Data_2 Subject areas (sciences): Both CLAPER subjects at article level and ISI subject categories at journal level were aggregated into larger scientific disciplines using OST 2006 indicators. Subject areas (social sciences/humanities): Glanzel & Schubert (2003) Countries: names were normalized across databases and each counted once per document. Other variables: document type; language.

23 Main results More total records for Mexico in WoS than CLAPER
Many more records in AH&SS in CLAPER than in WoS Dominant mode of IC in both databases was purely extraregional Higher % of IC in WoS than CLAPER CLAPER had higher % but a smaller no. of purely intraregional collaboration Subject distribution of IC was more even overall between levels in WoS than in CLAPER Cuba is the most frequent partner in intra-regional collaboration in both databases, then Brazil; US and Spain at other levels Greater visibility of papers published in Spanish in CLAPER

24 Future work Role of scientifically advanced countries in cementing collaborations between LA countries. Differences in numbers of citations between the different levels of Mexican international collaboration Internal geographical distribution of Mexican international collaboration
