4 Introduction to Digital Production 120
Memes, as you know are widely used and can be extremely entertaining, informative. They are an instant form of communication that has gained popularity with the rise of technology. Today, we are going to try a fun meme project to kick off the year using famous works of art or photographs. This digital art project is quick, easy, makes an engaging and popular display. It’s called “Meaningful Memes.”

5 Samples

6 Meaningful Meme 1. Choose a famous work of art or photograph you connect with. Research this piece of art/photograph, focusing on the details and the context of the piece. When was it painted and was it de rigueur for its time? What does the painting depict? Who/what is featured? What were the motivations for making it?

7 Meaningful Mean 2 Think about how the art makes them and you feel.
Think about the color palette, the mood, and what’s depicted. What emotions does it evoke? Does it feel alive and upbeat or solemn and still?

8 Meaningful Meme 3. Try to connect these emotions to your own life.
Try to connect with a piece that might be hard for to connect with otherwise. Emotions trump time, place, and almost everything else that can act as a barrier to understanding. This also establishes a tie between personal experience and the act of appreciating a new piece of art. You will be far more apt to remember the details of a piece when you can connect it to your own experience.

9 Meaningful Meme 4. Then, then create a meme that brings the two ideas together. Your challenge is to create a modern meme using the piece of art as the image and text, which reflects your own experience. You can make modern meanings and connections with art from any period.

10 Van Gogh Meme

11 Meaningful Meme The Results
After doing this project, you’ll hopefully process your chosen piece of work on a new level. It’s a great way to make historical pieces relevant today. For example, in Van Gogh’s melancholic Portrait of Dr. Gachet one student learned of Van Gogh’s struggle with depression and his unfavorable opinion of the doctor when he painted the portrait. So, the student added a funny line of text about something that would depress him personally. I doubt he will forget the details of the portrait after making this meme because he made it personal. It’s a way to benefit from the current “Me” culture and to reflect and learn about the past.

12 Generating a Meme

13 Assignment In fifty to seventy-five words (50-75) discuss the artist/photographer and painting/photograph you have chosen. Research and consider the following information to research: When was it created and was it de rigueur (current or appropriate) for its time? What does the painting/photograph depict? Who/what is featured? What were the motivations for making it? Think about the color palette, the mood, and what’s depicted. What emotions does it evoke? Does it feel alive and upbeat or solemn and still?
