1 Safeguarding Your Future Survey
October 2018 Job Reference:

2 Project Background & Research Objectives
Safeguarding Ireland is planning a number of campaigns to create more awareness about vulnerable adults and to promote initiatives that support this group. Research was required to determine: The incidence of “safeguarding your future”, i.e. planning ahead in case of becoming vulnerable, in the population overall and by key demographics. Most common actions taken for “safeguarding your future”, e.g. pension, will, attorney, etc. Research was conducted using RED C’s online omnibus, the RED Line, on the 20th-25th September 2018, achieving a nationally representative sample of n=1,009 adults 18+ years.

3 REDLINE RED Line Methodology 51% 49% 28% 18% 28% Age Gender Region
Research was conducted using the RED Line online omnibus. Through our online panel of over 41,000 members, the RED Line service allows us to reach a representative sample of the adult population 18+ across Ireland in a cost effective and timely manner. Quota controls are used to ensure a nationally representative sample of ROI adults aged 18+, with interlocking quotas to provide extra confidence in sample profile. Data was weighted across gender, age, region and social class so as to ensure a nationally representative sample based on latest CSO projections. Weighted to be representative of all adults aged 18+ using the latest CSO census data on the following demographics. Age Gender 49% 51% Region Social Class ABC1‘s: 42% Dublin 28% Conn/ Ulster 18% C2DE‘s: 52% Rest of Leinster 26% Munster 28%

4 Safeguarding Your Future

5 Incidence of Planning Ahead to Safeguard Future
(Base: All Adults 18+; n=1,009) I have a Will, which sets out my wishes on distribution of my estate after I die I have a personal pension (or comparable income scheme) in place to finance my life & well-being after retirement I am aware of what an advance healthcare directive is I have discussed my preferred place of care (at home or nursing home) with family or friends (or my Attorney under an Enduring Power of Attorney) for if I developed a serious or long-term illness I am aware of the Think Ahead guide to planning your affairs in the event of an emergency, serious illness, or death I have legally nominated a trusted person or persons in my family, or trusted friend to be my Attorney (under an Enduring Power of Attorney) to make decisions about me & my finances if I become unable to manage them myself None of these 48% Half of the population (52%) have taken at least one of the six suggested actions to safeguard their future. Taking out a will is the most common action, followed by having a personal pension. Only 6% have nominated an Attorney to make decisions for them, if they become unable to do so themselves. (Q.1)

7 Key Insights Almost half of the Irish population do not have any of the mentioned safeguarding actions in place. This is particularly the case for younger age groups (18-44) but also lower social classes and females. Wills and Pensions are the most used Safeguarding actions, while few have appointed an Attorney to make decision on their behalf, if becoming unable to do so themselves.
