1 Warm Up Imagine you are rolling 2 six-sided dice. 1) What is the probability to roll a sum of 7? 2) What is the probability to roll a sum of 6 or 7? 3) What is the probability to roll anything except a sum of 6 or 7?

2 Chapter 6 – Random Variables
Random Variable – A variable whose value is the numerical outcome of a random event. We often refer to the probability of each outcome. Example: The sum of rolling 2 dies.

3 Random Variables Discrete Random Variable – A variable with a fixed number of possible values. Continuous Random Variable – A variable that takes on all values within an interval of numbers.

4 Discrete Random Variables
Each table will find an example of a discrete random variable. (You cannot select flipping coins or rolling dies) Also, show the probability distribution for your discrete random variable. If you don’t know the actual probabilities make an educated guess.

5 Practice The data below is the probability of having a family of the size shown in U.S. households. Family Size Probability ) Is this a legitimate probability distribution? 2) Find the mean family size. 3) Find P(> 4) 4) Find P(≤ 3)
