2 April 2009 doc.: IEEE yy/xxxxr0 April 2009 Abstract This presentation is to explore a different approach to the TVWS coexistence issue, and a possible way to complete the task with useful deliverables in a reasonable amount of time. 3 The Problem is the Realities
April 2009 The Problem is the Realities Any wireless technology that can use the TVWS will 802.11/15/16/22 and nn Other TVBDs Wireless microphones Nothing we do here will change that We cannot with any certainty predict what use cases will arise, which ones will fail and which will dominate e.g. High power base stations will impact indoor use cases Future technological developments will emerge We cannot predict the future in an unlicensed band without more restrictive regulations We should work with what we do know The regulatory restrictions The medium access methods of the known technologies and how well they work together with other 802 technologies and handle interference from non-802 devices Rich Kennedy, Research In Motion

4 April 2009 So What Should We Do? Focus on the impact the various technologies have on each other, regardless of use case Make predictions on how well each will do in the presence of the others Make recommendations on minimizing the impact Bring the findings to the EC so they can recommend to each of the affected WGs Worst case scenarios to avoid Mechanisms that might improve the efficacy of their technology in this unlicensed band If it looks like it will be an IEEE 802 “food fight”, recommendations on the best way to enable the best social and commercial use of the band Rich Kennedy, Research In Motion
