I want you to think of someone that believes in you. How do you know that they believe in you? Why do they see potential in you? How do you feel when you disappoint that person?

3 Grady’s Impact The idea of the “New South” was pitched by Grady but felt by citizens of Atlanta Grady used the time after the destruction as a resurrection in the South Grady had the idea to bring people to the south to show them that they were different

4 International Cotton Exposition
There were three major Cotton Expositions held in Atlanta (1881, 85, and 95) The first two were promoted by Grady Like a world’s fair to showcase industrial potential in the South In 1895 Booker T. Washington spoke in Atlanta to get blacks to do what they know, Dubois disagreed

5 Tom Watson and the Pop 1856-1922 Born in Columbia county GA
Elected into the GGA Focused his career on helping poor sharecroppers and providing public education for all He wanted to lower taxes for poor farmers, start of the Populist party

6 The Populists . . . Watson started off wanting to help everyone (Black included) getting people to vote him in as the “People Party” or Populist movement He had a bid for Vice President but it failed In 1904 he realized the people really didn’t go for his racial equality stance so he turned against blacks, Catholics and Jews He remained popular with Rural White Farmers till his death

7 Rebecca Latimer Felton
Born in DeKalb County GA Was first in her class at Madison Female college She spent years battling with the Bourbon Triumvirate (Gordon especially) She was a writer, activist, and the first female US senator after Watson died Really pushed for Women’s suffrage (vote)
