Use a simple puppet or toy to give children instructions. The instructions should be given by saying the sounds in the word e.g. Pupil can you stand u-p or Pupil can you j-u-m-p

8. Ideas for segmenting Where is the sound?
Hold up a sound
Allocate a sound that pupils have learnt to a row or group. Say a word. If the pupils are in the row/group with the starting sound for the word, they must put their hand up or hold up their sound written on their slate.
Where is the sound?
Say a word, eg. Bat. Ask pupils where in the word one of the sounds come eg. Where is the ‘a’ sound: beginning, middle or end?
Missing sound
Draw a picture and write all but one of the sounds next to it, eg. _og next to a dog. Children to work out what the missing sound is.
Segmenting frame
Write a caption
Remember and write a sentence
