To have a range of strategies for teaching phonics. To have a plan for a phonics session for your own setting. To share good practice across settings.

7 Ideas for blending Puppets
Use a simple puppet or toy to give children instructions. The instructions should be given by saying the sounds in the word e.g. Pupil can you stand u-p or Pupil can you j-u-m-p Find things that start with…./I spy… Match the picture Read a caption Yes/No questions Real or made up words?

8 Ideas for segmenting Where is the sound?
Hold up a sound Allocate a sound that pupils have learnt to a row or group. Say a word. If the pupils are in the row/group with the starting sound for the word, they must put their hand up or hold up their sound written on their slate. Where is the sound? Say a word, eg. Bat. Ask pupils where in the word one of the sounds come eg. Where is the ‘a’ sound: beginning, middle or end? Missing sound Draw a picture and write all but one of the sounds next to it, eg. _og next to a dog. Children to work out what the missing sound is. Segmenting frame Write a caption Remember and write a sentence

10 Ideas for teaching different graphemes
Grouping graphemes that have the same sound. Best guess. Identifying different graphemes. Yesterday’s great race was bravely won by Dave the Snail.

11 Plan a session Where are your children at? What are their strengths and weaknesses How can you find out? What activities could you use? Share ideas. What could you do differently?
