Agenda Aim: What are the contributions and achievements of early river valley civilizations? Do Now: List 3 to 5 types of artifacts that you would want to find to prove to the world that a civilization existed. Aim: What are the contributions and achievements of early river civilizations? Do Now: Imagine that you are on an adventure to discover a lost civilization. List 3 to 5 types of artifacts that you would want to find to prove to the world that a civilization existed. Why did you choose them?

Mini-lesson: Ancient Egypt
The Nile River was the center of Egyptian civilization. The source of the Nile begins south of Egypt and flows north into the Mediterranean Sea. The yearly floods were usually predictable, and were necessary for farming. The Egyptians dug irrigation canals connecting to the Nile to help guarantee better crops. To control the floods, the Egyptians built dams. The Nile Delta

Mini-lesson: Ancient Egypt becomes a civilization
Ancient Egypt originally was two separate kingdoms; Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt BCE Pharaoh Menes united both into one kingdom, and created the first Egyptian dynasty (family of rulers). B) Pharaohs had absolute power. They claimed divine right; their power came from the gods.

Cleopatra’s Needle Archaeologists find artifacts and then make inferences to help them learn about a civilization Cleopatra’s Needle is an obelisk which is a stone pillar, typically having a square or rectangular cross section and a top that looks like a pyramid. It is set up as a monument or landmark.

Turn & Talk Look at the characteristics of a civilization chart. Which characteristic do you think best represents the obelisk and why? Reflect Write your answer Share with your partner

Work Period Activity With your partner you will travel to seven stations around the room. As you travel to each station you will complete your I See, I Think, I Wonder chart to decide which characteristic of a civilization best represents the artifact.
