2 Ophthalmology defined
The branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of the eye.

3 Jobs associated with Ophthalmology
Ophthalmologist: are medical doctors who can perform surgery in addition to providing medical eye treatment.  Optometrists: Optometrists examine, diagnose, treat, and manage disorders of the visual system, eye diseases, and injuries. They prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses as needed. Opticians: Design, measure, fit, and adapt lenses and frames for client according to written optical prescription or specification.

4 Education Ophthalmologists:  four years of college followed by four years of medical school and a minimum of three years in residency Optometrists: must complete a Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree program and obtain a license to practice in a particular state. Doctor of Optometry programs take 4 years to complete, and most students have a bachelor’s degree before entering an O.D. program. Opticians: associate's or bachelor's degree in opticianry may offer a competitive advantage. No formal college education needed but is offered for advanced placement in job field.
