Figure 1 Schematic Illustration of the Interactions between the Anti-diabetic Drug Metformin and the Microbiota of Type 2 Diabetic Patients in Cohorts from Denmark, Sweden, and China Type 2 diabetic patients display a dysbiotic and dysfunctional microbiota, which contributes to impaired glucose homeostasis. Metformin treatment of type 2 diabetic patients leads to positive taxonomic and functional changes in the microbiota. Microbial-associated changes possibly contribute to improved glycaemia but are also responsible for the side effects of the drug.
