Counterargument Rebuttal
Strong Counterargument – Doesn’t just say that people are for technology or for school uniforms. It doesn’t just say that people want early start times. It gives a real reason why someone would disagree with your thesis. Strong Rebuttal – Stays on topic. It argues against the point that was made in the counterargument. It connects to it and gives evidence to support the battle against the counterargument.

Rebuttal Counterargument Weak Counterarguments Acknowledges that there is another side, but not why the other side would oppose their argument. Rebuttal– You can’t have an aggressive rebuttal when the counterargument was weak to begin with.

Example However, starting late means kids that walk home have to walk at night and bad things could happen to them This is true, but some parents will have time to pick up their kids because schools start later. Seattle public school is now one of the largest school districts in the nation where teenagers will start classes later than 8:30.This means that parents will have more time to pick up their kids.

Example 2 The opposing person might argue that teens who wake up early still have the same performance as teens who wake up later. Nevertheless, teens who wake up later have a better performance because the brain had more time to prepare itself. Unlike teens who wake up earlier, the brain did not have enough time to wake up. In fact, according to the article "Sleep, Later Start Times Increase Teens' Grades" Thomas Conrad, a principle of the 1,000+ student school in North Eastham, states that "The preliminary finding show that with the 8:30 AM start time, there has been a 53 percent drop in failing grades."

Example 3 However, critics state technology is having a positive impact on students and they state that video lectures helped students score 4.11 on their caculus test in the years Though this is a valid point, how does video lectures affect the students social skills? Phones are mostly the problem. Kenny Alarcon, 16, states that when he gets a text he's itching to answer it. They maybe watching video lectures at school then coming home to there phones. Video lectures are helping their educations, not their interactions with others.

Example 4 However, some opponents may argue that later school start times are not helpful for students because some have after school activities and some have to take care of younger siblings after school. Teaches also have to change their schedules to a later time. Though the opponent makes a valid point, in the article, "Pediatricians Say School Shouls Start Later For Teens' Health", "...this is one area where the evidence is unequivocal, the pediatricians say. As children become teenagers, their sleep-wake cycle shifts two hours later, so it's difficult, if not impossible, for them to go to sleep before 10:30 p.m." The teens' health comes first. It is more important to keep the students healthy rather than worrying about after school activities or changing your schedules to a later time.

Example 5 Never the less, some critics argue that with a late start time teens are not able to do after school activities or jobs. It is better for teens to get the day over with and start the school day early. This is true, however education should come first. Teens shouldn't have to worry about after school activities until education is done. How can teens focus on education when there not getting enough sleep? In the article, student officials weigh pros and cons of school start times. Dr. John Rodrigues states that ''My kids have grown up, but I clearly remember on weekends how late they would be sleeping in.
