This story was all about how the American Flag came to be and the importance of this flag for all Americans. First, we learned that the flag has lots of nicknames like Old Glory and The Stars and Stripes. Next, we learned that America didn’t need flag until the American Revolution, when they wanted their independence from England. Then, the author told the (MAYBE true) story of Betsy Ross, a famous seamstress from Philadelphia that George Washington asked to sew the first flag. There were many different flags during the American Revolution. After the revolution, Congress said that there should be just 1 kind of flag, with 13 stars and 13 stripes to represent the 13 colonies. During the War of 1812, England came to America and bombed a fort in Maryland. Francis Scott Key then wrote the Star Spangled Banner when he saw the flag still waving over the fort after all the fighting. As more states were added to the United States, Congress finally said that the flag will have 13 stripes for the 13 original colonies and 1 star for each state. Eventually, 11 states from the south did not want to be a part of The United states of America. They formed the Confederate States of America and used the Confederate flag. Abe Lincoln, our president at the time, would not let the stars of those 11 stated be removed from the American flag because he believed we would all be united again. After the Civil War, all of the stated were united again. June 14 , 1877 was the 1oo-year anniversary of the American Flag. It is still the day we celebrate as Flag Day. In closing, these are the key details in the story of the American Flag.
