3 Introduction Agenda Introduction Where are we
Update on HSLT Activities Interactive discussion Summary and close

4 Introduction Our vision is to achieve zero accidents and zero harm to our staff, contractors and everyone affected by our work by never compromising on health and safety To deliver this we need a ‘one team one vision’ approach and as such we are all in this together. We are passionate about protecting the health and safety of everyone who is involved in the delivery of our work and guess what…..that includes you and your employees Tier 2 suppliers play a vital role in the delivery of our work and are often seen as the unsung heroes however, we cannot achieve our vision without the engagement and commitment from all parties involved.

5 Where are we? Graph shows accident injury rate. People in the room may be more familiar with accident frequency rate (AFR). The equivalent AFR figures would be just over half of the number on here. There has been a steady decline over the past 2 years in the number of people who have been seriously hurt or unable to work due to an accident at work We have made a great improvement in the last 2 and a half years but we can do better. Whilst this performance is great we will not get to zero by accepting that what we are doing is ok or just doing more of the same. To get to zero, health and safety must be at the forefront of everything we do and we must not allow ourselves to compromise for the sake of saving that extra few pounds or a day on the programme. We are all responsible for the lives of our employees who are in our care whilst they are working for us and we have a duty to protect them Some of you may not see anything wrong with this graph and think that we are managing health and safety effectively. But we are not (see next slide)

6 Where are we? Tier 1 to add relevant photos for discussion on this slide We are still having significant incidents that either do, or have the potential to cause serious injury to people. These incidents happen to both tier 1 and tier 2 contractors Info - Photo provided is a Black & Veatch incident where a sheet pile fell from the clamp holding it, narrowly missing an operative who was working near to where the pile landed Instructions to Tier 1 - Add specific photos and talk about your collective H&S performance as a tier 1 contractor. Identify and share information on relevant incidents and learning achieved. Discuss H&S performance relating to your tier 2 suppliers, identifying relevant factors, eg percentage of workforce are supply chain and percentage of incidents involve supply chain personnel.

7 What are we doing? Instructions to tier 1
Click on the screen on the slide and you will be taken by a link, to healthandsafetyhub.co.uk. Click on HSLT tab – Initiatives and explain HSLT activities for last 2 years HSLT – made up of representative from across our partner organisations, all of whom are passionate about improving health and safety. The HSLT meets monthly and is currently chaired by Mark Allan (B&V). The HSLT have developed a number of initiatives which focus on improving key areas of health and safety management including: Behavioural Safety – based on 6 pillars this initiatives encourages all partners to ensure they have a comprehensive approach to behavioural safety Inspirational Leadership – Based on the training programme given to all supervisors on the Olympic Park, this programme helps supervisors to understand the important role they play in ensuring good standards of site health and safety and helps them to learn how to communicate more effectively. Essential Safety Information – this initiative focusses on ensuring that everyone who works or visits a site has the relevant information to keep them safe and healthy whilst on site. Encourages partners to review their induction material and arrangements for regular briefing of information. Risk Assessment – focusses on the principles of good risk management. It does not dictate the format of risk assessments but instead encourages partners to think about the competencies of those involved in the risk assessment process and how to ensure that risk assessments are communicated and monitored effectively. Effective Health and Safety Management – Based on HSG65, this essential standard outlines the basis of an effective H&S management system All of the above initiatives can be seen on healthandsafetyhub.co.uk.

8 Tier 1 Activities/Initiatives
Tier 1 to outline current health and safety activities and initiatives Instructions to Tier 1 – Please use this slide to update your tier 2 suppliers on local H&S initiatives, campaigns and activities that you are currently running. It is important to show what activities you are doing to also show your commitment to improving health and safety. Where possible include information on how the initiatives have made your workplace a safer and healthier place to work. This can be measured through climate surveys or quotes from operatives and supervisors

9 So far you have heard about where we are and why we need to do better – People are still being harmed at work and we all need to take positive action to prevent this You have also heard what the HSLT and your Tier 1 contractor is doing to improve health and safety and now we want to hear from you Instructions to Tier 1 - We would like you to ask the delegates to discuss the following 2 questions in groups of of 3-5 (depending on numbers etc) for 20 minutes per question. Question 1 – What can we do to help you improve your health and safety performance? Question 2 – What can you do to improve your health and safety performance? After the 20 minutes, you will need to facilitate a feedback and discussion session for a further 20 mins. After the first question there will be a 15 minute tea break before you start the next question. IMPORTANT – DURING THIS SESSION YOU MUST EXPLAIN TO THE TIER 2 CONTRACTORS THAT WE WOULD LIKE THEM TO BE REALLY OPEN AND HONEST ABOUT THIS FEEDBACK BECAUSE WE REALLY WANT TO HEAR IT. WE ARE COMMITTED TO OUR VISION AND NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE INFLUENCE AND IMPACT THAT WE HAVE ON YOUR HEALTH AND SAFETY PERFORMANCE.

10 Interactive part… Please take a moment in groups to discuss the following questions What more can we do to help improve the health and safety performance on our projects? For the purposes of this question ‘we’ means both the HSLT/TW and the Tier 1 contractor. If you have a tumbleweed moment you may wish to enquire about their thoughts and feelings relating to Beliefs commitment to H&S of either TW or tier 1 contractor Whether actions are aligned to our beliefs and commitment to 3 zeros the way that you, a tier 1 contractor, engage with them on site and at a senior level your health and standards or work processes visibility and direction of the HSLT HSLT initiatives TW procurement processes.

11 Tea break Back in 15 minutes!
Instructions to Tier 1 – During the tea break please make a note of the key points and actions raised during the first session. These will be split into: Actions/questions/suggestions that require the HSLT to answer Actions/questions/suggestions that the Tier 1 contractors can action locally Actions/questions/suggestions that require TW to answer. Back in 15 minutes! 11 11

12 Question 2 What can you do to help improve the health and safety performance on our projects? Similar to the first session, please ask delegates to discuss in groups of 3-5 people for 20mins. Encourage them to come up with specific actions and objectives with timescales, rather than comments like ‘get out on site more’. These suggestions/actions will be their own commitment to us and we would expect them to manage them through to completion.
