1 The Keys to Communication
Types of Communication Styles

2 What kind of communication?

3

4 Kinds of Communication
Spoken Communication through speaking Unspoken Communication through your body language Written Communication through any form of writing

5 Brainstorming Create a list in your groups of examples of the types of communication…

6 Styles of Communication
In all communication, there are generally four kinds of communication styles: Passive Aggressive Passive-Aggressive Assertive In written, spoken, or unspoken communication, you can have all of these.

7 Passive Communication
Does not express feelings or needs; uses “we” frequently Allows others to do what they want Can act indifferently and yields to others Never says “no” to a request Example: Person A: “You are so stupid; you never do anything right!” Person B: “Yeah, I guess I’m pretty dumb…” Person A (older): “Where do you want to eat?” Person B (younger): “Wherever you want is good.”

8 Aggressive Communication
Communication – spoken and unspoken as well as written – that is aggressive Very direct questions and comments Can be very rude Loud and demanding Can feel threatening Examples: Person A: “I think that maybe your idea is not right…” Person B: “I’m right and you are wrong! It’s all our fault!”

9 Passive-Aggressive Communication
Appears passive but is indirectly, subtly aggressive Communicator feels powerless Use body language that is opposite how they feel Can be secretly angry Examples: Person A: “Let’s go get bibimbap again!” Person B: “Ok… that’s… great. We always eat such delicious food together.” Person A: “I decided to go to the movies for the birthday party.” Person B: “That’s fine with me, but don’t be surprised if someone else gets mad.”

10

11 Assertive Communication
Expresses desires directly but not rudely Not overbearing or aggressive Balancing self-interest with the interests of others Really popular in Western countries Uses “I” frequently Examples: “I think it could be best to try it this way.” “I feel that doing this would not help others.”

12 Scenarios What kind of communication are these?
