1 Sustainable Product Development
Regulations Neopost Technologies – Confidential – November R. van den Berg

2 Compliance to regulations
Eco-Regulations (WEEE, RoHS, EuP, REACH) Target is to comply to regulations that also apply to franking machines, copiers and printers, even if inserters are not explicitly mentioned (yet). Main impact for Product Design: Energy Use (EuP) End of Life (WEEE) Avoid use of dangerous material (RoHS & REACH) EuP WEEE click me! RoHS REACH Neopost Technologies – Confidential – November R. van den Berg

3 Regulations: WEEE Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment
Compulsory to put marking on machine We comply (since 2005) WEEE prescribes >75% recovery rate (=material recycling + incineration) Company policy to comply for new projects back Neopost Technologies – Confidential – November R. van den Berg

4 Regulations: RoHS Reduction of Hazardous Substances
Company policy to comply We comply (since 2006) back Neopost Technologies – Confidential – November R. van den Berg

5 Regulations: EuP (Energy using Products)
External Power Supplies Compulsory for all Power Supplies we sell april 2010: < 0,5 no load + efficiency > 85% april 2011: < 0,3 no load + efficiency > 87% Action ongoing to comply Standby & Off Mode Company policy to comply for new projects Jan 2010: Standby / Off Mode < 1 W Jan 2013: Automatic switch to Standby / Off mode < 0,5 W Hydrus & Katana: prepared for compliance Andromeda 1: No Standby (Off Mode: 0 W) back Neopost Technologies – Confidential – November R. van den Berg

6 Regulations: REACH Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of CHemicals
Follow up under discussion “Substances of Very High Concern” need to be registered by Nov 2010 if Q > 1000t / year (for some dangerous chemicals: registration if Q > 1t /year) Applicable to: NeoSeal (we have a responsibility as producer) Chemicals site (e.g. in manufacturing, cleaning) Check presence & quantities of SVHC list in our products Quantity & intended use need to be registered if on the SVHC list. Main actions foreseen (TBD): QHSE (check updates & registration) Purchasing (check supplier compliance, check presence of chemicals) Neopost Technologies – Confidential – November R. van den Berg

7 Likely to be found in electrical and electronic equipment?
REACH Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of CHemicals back Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern Substance name Likely to be found in electrical and electronic equipment? Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) YES. DBP is used as a plasticiser in resins and polymers such as PVC. In flexible PVC the typical phthalate content ranges from 35 – 45%. DBP is also used in printing inks, adhesives, sealants, nitrocellulose paints, film coatings and glass fibres. Bis (2-ethyl(hexyl)phthalate) (DEHP) YES. DEHP is widely used as a plasticiser in polymers products, mainly PVC. In flexible PVC the typical phthalate content ranges from 30 to 45% w/w. DEHP is also used in adhesives and sealants, paints and lacquers, printing inks and in advanced ceramic materials for capacitors and other electronic components. Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD) YES. HBCDD is used as an additive flame retardant in high impact polystyrene (HIPS) which is found in electrical housings and distribution boxes. The HBCDD content in HIPS range from 5 to 7% SCCP - Alkanes, C10-13, chloro (Short Chain Chlorinated Paraffins) POSSIBLE. SCCP are currently used as a flame retardant in textiles and rubber, in paint and in sealants and adhesives. TBTO - Bis(tributyltin)oxide POSSIBLE. TBTO is used at concentrations at about 1% in biocides used in several manufacturing applications including polyurethane foam. An amendment is currently being prepared which will ban all uses of TBTO in articles. BPP - Benzyl butyl phthalate YES. BPP is used as a plasticiser in polymer products, mainly PVC. In flexible PVC the typical phthalate content ranges from 30 to 45% w/w. BBP is also used in sealants (polysulfide based, polyurethane based or acrylic-based), adhesives (based on polyacrylics and polyvinylacetate), paints (based on polyurethane and polyacrylics), inks and lacquers (based on acrylics, nitrocellulose and vinyl resins) Neopost Technologies – Confidential – November R. van den Berg
