3. Weather
The state of the atmosphere at a place and time as regards heat, dryness, sunshine, wind, and rain.
Describes the short-term state of the atmosphere (different from climate)

4. Causes of Weather
Earth is round  the Sun's rays don't fall evenly on the land and oceans.
Differences in temperature create a restless movement of air and water in great swirling currents to distribute heat energy from the Sun across the planet
When warm and cool air currents meet, it creates different weather

5. Air Movement and Weather
The location where two air masses meet is called a FRONT.
Cold fronts (blue) occur where a cold air mass is replacing a warm air mass.
Warm fronts (red) occur where warm air replaces cold air.

6. Fronts and the Weather They Bring
*Colder air is more dense than warmer air
Cold fronts: Cold air catches up with warm air and forces the warm air up quickly creating abrupt large clouds
Warm fronts: Warm air catches up with cold air and forces the warm air up at a more gradual slope. Creates high level clouds and eventually precipitation

Stationary Front: Boundary between hot and cold front that does not move
