Figure 1 Results of HEV serology and HEV RNA testing of the 80 detected patients with ALF and differentiation between negative, indeterminate, and positive results. Twelve patients tested positive for anti-HEV IgG, of whom 2 were indeterminate and 2 were positive for anti-HEV IgM. The 2 patients with positive anti-HEV IgM also were positive for HEV RNA. One patient had indeterminate testing for anti-HEV IgG but tested negative for anti-HEV IgM as well as for HEV RNA. Three of the patients who tested negative for anti-HEV IgG showed positive results for anti-HEV IgM and consequently for HEV RNA. One patient who tested negative for anti-HEV IgG and IgM showed a positive result for HEV RNA. PCR, polymerase chain reaction.
