Concept of Operations:
Travel south from I10 (Lake Charles) on HWY 27 to the Sabine Wildlife Refuge. Enter West Cove Recreation area to access boat ramp.
Utilizing early hours to avoid heavy boat traffic, choppy waters, and high winds, paddle east out of the west cove canal towards the “Old Camp” canal located to the southeast.
On approach to “Old Camp” (identified by the abandoned pier) gauge tide flow direction. Speckled trout feed at this outlet, as bait fish are pushed in and out of the canal. Flounder and Speckled trout utilize the cover of the pier to launch strikes. Work lures quickly through the water after allowing them to settle on the bottom.
Continue movement into the marsh, taking advantage of drops in water depth and natural breaks in the grass break forcing water movement.
Continue movement West to Northwest through marsh stopping at hot spots (Birds Feeding a strong indicator of feeding Redfish).
