1 8th Grade Social Studies Mrs. Miles
The United States Exploration through Industrialization

2 Student Growth It is my belief that each student is unique.
It is my strong belief that WE all make mistakes and WHAT WE DO AFTERWARDS SHOWS OUR CHARACTER. Revision of work is part of the process. It is helpful to know if a student is struggling with a situation, etc. so assignments and/or tests can be adjusted. Communication is the key to success.

3 TCI - History Alive Chaparral uses the History Alive Curriculum
This curriculum offers carefully structured, research-based lessons that meet the Common Core Standards It is highly interactive – lots of PARTICIPATION Builds critical reading & thinking skills as well as individual, partner & group work

4 Current Events WHY? Enables students to address peers/adults and build confidence in public speaking! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Students. have been assigned dates to present current articles from NEWSPAPERS Students are to: Review a newspaper (not older than 7 days out) Find an article that interests them Thoroughly read full article Highlight pertinent information that they will share i.e. tell/read to class. Present article to class - it is important to use proper voice projection so the class can hear Lead class in discussion (It’s a good idea to practice presentation at home before class presentation.) **IF a student needs a newspaper they should see me.

5 Courthouse Tour North Justice Center in Fullerton
Observe actual court proceedings Visit jury assembly room, inmates’ intake and holding area Meet reps from DA office, sheriff Participate in Mock Trial in actual courtroom. Chaperones needed for 4 different trips

6 Veterans’ Day – Extra Credit
Veterans’ Day Parade in Fullerton (Optional – if a student would like an alternative please see me.) November 11, 2017, begins at 10:15 am Parade proceeds on Harbor Blvd., starting at Wilshire Avenue then moves to Hillcrest Park at the corner of Harbor Blvd and Valley View Drive. Students view parade of veterans and follow parade to Hillcrest Park for speech and other ceremonies. Students turn in required material and written report for extra credit points. Additional information will be provided to the class. *Alterantive assignment offered upon request

TCI Text book and ISN Blue or black pens, red pens, pencils Notebook paper / Spiral notebook Silent reading book Other supplies needed but not on a daily basis: Glue stick Color pencils Markers Scissors All supply lists are “suggested”

8 Homework Students are directed and required to write assignments in agendas aka binder reminders 2-3 times per week (often begun during class time) All homework must be complete to earn credit Work must be neat, have correct headings, and be readily available Work is due at the beginning of class Late work will be accepted for partial credit..

9 Make up work Upon return from an absence, it is the student’s responsibility to request make-up work. Students can also check my Homework Page If a student is absent for a school activity it is their responsibility to get the work before the absence. At times, students may want to come early to school or at break or lunch to “catch up” on in-class assignments. Request time/date with teacher.

10 Availability I’m available before school, providing I do not have meetings , duty, etc. – students should speak to me to receive a pass to the classroom area. I’m often available after school. Let me know in advance so I can plan to stay.

11 My family life Married to my husband for 38 years
Four children, 1 daughter-in-law, 1 almost daughter-in-law,2 son-in-law and 1 Grandbaby I’ve taught for 27 years I enjoy traveling, gardening, golfing, cooking, baking, time with family and friends, my dog and cat, and reading AND playing with Madelyn Notre Dame football (and UCLA a little bit)
