1 A Five-Paragraph Essay Review and Breakdown
BING, BANG, BONGO A Five-Paragraph Essay Review and Breakdown

2 Introductory (Paragraph 1)
The introductory paragraph should also include the thesis statement, a kind of mini-outline for the paper: it tells the reader what the essay is about. The last sentence of this paragraph must also contain a transitional "hook" which moves the reader to the first paragraph of the body of the paper.

3 BING: Body Paragraph 1 The first paragraph of the body should contain the strongest argument, most significant example, cleverest illustration, or an obvious beginning point. The first sentence of this paragraph should include the "reverse hook," which ties in with the transitional hook at the end of the introductory paragraph. The topic for this paragraph should be in the first or second sentence. This topic should relate to the thesis statement in the introductory paragraph. The last sentence in this paragraph should include a transitional hook to tie into the second paragraph of the body.

4 BANG: Body Paragraph 2 The second paragraph of the body should contain the second strongest argument, second most significant example, second cleverest illustration, or an obvious follow up the first paragraph in the body. The first sentence of this paragraph should include the reverse hook which ties in with the transitional hook at the end of the first paragraph of the body. The topic for this paragraph should be in the first or second sentence. This topic should relate to the thesis statement in the introductory paragraph. The last sentence in this paragraph should include a transitional hook to tie into the third paragraph of the body.

5 BONGO: Body Paragraph 3 The third paragraph of the body should contain the weakest argument, weakest example, weakest illustration, or an obvious follow up to the second paragraph in the body. The first sentence of this paragraph should include the reverse hook which ties in with the transitional hook at the end of the second paragraph. The topic for this paragraph should be in the first or second sentence. This topic should relate to the thesis statement in the introductory paragraph. The last sentence in this paragraph should include a transitional concluding hook that signals the reader that this is the final major point being made in this paper. This hook also leads into the last, or concluding, paragraph.

6 Conclusion (Paragraph 5)
An allusion to the pattern used in the introductory paragraph, A restatement of the thesis statement, using some of the original language or language that "echoes" the original language. (The restatement, however, must not be a duplicate thesis statement.) A summary of the three main points from the body of the paper. A final statement that gives the reader signals that the discussion has come to an end. (This final statement may be a "call to action" in an persuasive paper.)

7 The Writing Process Prewriting is the stage in which you explore possible topics, choose a topic, and then gather details you can include in your writing. Drafting involves putting ideas down on paper in a rough format. Revising is the stage in which you rework your rough draft to improve both its form and its content. Editing and proofreading are the stages in which you polish your writing, fixing errors in grammar, spelling, and mechanics. Publishing and presenting are the sharing of your writing.

8 Writing the Five-Paragraph Essay

9 Writing the THESIS statement
Don't let the term “Thesis Statement” scare you away from writing a good paper. “Thesis statement” is just a fancy term for a one-sentence summary of what the main purpose or point of your paper is. A good thesis statement is very specific. It is not just a general statement.

10 Writing a Good Thesis Statement: Be Specific
Television commercials are better crafted than most television programming in their video techniques, audio techniques, and use of language. Participation in sports teaches students self-discipline, team building, and leadership skills. NOT! Television commercials are better than regular television programming. Participation in sports is good for students.

11 A thesis does not announce what you are going to talk about in your essay.
The deserts of the world have many things in common: climate, vegetation, and animal life. California has a wide variety of interesting geographical features such as mountains, lakes, and deserts. NOT! I am going to tell you about the deserts of the world.  My report is on the state of California.

12 A thesis statement is not the title of your paper.
While the nutritional value of school lunches may be adequate, their taste and appearance are unappetizing. Teachers should explain lessons clearly, use technology, and allow students to work in groups in order to make classes more interesting. NOT! School Lunches Suck School is boring

13 A thesis does not just state a simple fact.
Guam is an island in the Pacific Ocean. Chamorro Village is located in Agana. Guam’s location in the Pacific Ocean makes this island a strategic military position, a convenient lay over for travelers in route to other places, and a business hub for other islands in this area. Guam has many cultural sites, beaches, and shopping areas for visitors to visit and enjoy.

14 Parts of the 5-Paragraph Essay Review
Introductory Paragraph includes a thesis statement that includes the Bing, the Bang, and the Bongo. 1st Body Paragraph talks only about the Bing. 2nd Body Paragraph talks only about the Bang. 3rd Body Paragraph talks only about the Bongo. Conclusion incorporates all three: The Bing, the Bang, and the Bongo.

15 Introductory Paragraph
"A dog is a man's best friend." That common saying may contain some truth, but dogs are not the only animal friend whose companionship people enjoy. For many people, a cat is their best friend. Despite what dog lovers may believe, cats make excellent house pets as they are good companions, they are civilized members of the household, and they are easy to care for.

16 1st Body Paragraph (the Bing)
In the first place, people enjoy the companionship of cats. Many cats are affectionate. They will snuggle up and ask to be petted, or scratched under the chin. Who can resist a purring cat? If they are not feeling affectionate, cats are generally quite playful. They love to chase balls and feathers, or just about anything dangling from a string. They especially enjoy playing when their owners are participating in the game. Contrary to popular opinion, cats can be trained. Using rewards and punishments, just like with a dog, a cat can be trained to avoid unwanted behavior or perform tricks. Cats will even fetch!

17 2nd Body Paragraph (The Bang)
In the second place, cats are civilized members of the household. Unlike dogs, cats do not bark or make other loud noises. Most cats do not even meow very often. They generally lead a quiet existence. Cats also do not often have "accidents." Mother cats train their kittens to use the litter box, and most cats will use it without fail from that time on. Even stray cats usually understand the concept when shown the box and will use it regularly. Cats do have claws, and owners must make provision for this. A tall scratching post in a favorite cat area of the house will often keep the cat content to leave the furniture alone. As a last resort, of course, cats can be declawed.

18 3rd Body Paragraph (The Bongo)
Lastly, one of the most attractive features of cats as house pets is their ease of care. Cats do not have to be walked. They get plenty of exercise in the house as they play, and they do their business in the litter box. Cleaning a litter box is a quick, painless procedure. Cats also take care of their own grooming. Bathing a cat is almost never necessary because under ordinary circumstances cats clean themselves. Cats are more particular about personal cleanliness than people are. In addition, cats can be left home alone for a few hours without fear. Unlike some pets, most cats will not destroy the furnishings when left alone. They are content to go about their usual activities until their owners return.

19 Conclusion (Bing, Bang, Bongo)
Cats are low maintenance, civilized companions. People who have small living quarters or less time for pet care should appreciate these characteristics of cats. However, many people who have plenty of space and time still opt to have a cat because they love the cat personality. In many ways, cats are the ideal house pet.

Indent your paragraphs or double space between paragraphs and don’t begin paragraphs with “In this paragraph I will tell about …” or “this paragraph will be about …” Do not use slang expressions or words such as “coz,” “gonna,” “wanna.” Use correct forms of homophones such as “their, there, they’re, it’s, its, to, two, too.” Use words such as “fewer” and “less” correctly. Do not be redundant (repeating the same ideas over and over using different words). Double check spelling and grammar. Make sure each sentence in a paragraph contributes to the main idea of that paragraph and use transitional words. Read everything thoroughly.
