28 Hebrews 12: Jesus, the Example Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 [a]fixing our eyes on Jesus, the [b]author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Himendured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary [c]and lose heart. 4 You have not yet resisted [d]to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin;

29 Cooperation In Sin Formal Cooperation: Direct support or assistance in an evil action. (Always Sinful) Example: “Nurse” who assists an abortionist in an abortion.

30 Cooperation In Sin Implicit Formal Cooperation: Willfully facilitates or condones a sinful action but does not actually commit it. (Always sinful) Example: Driving someone to an abortion clinic.

31 Cooperation In Sin Material Cooperation: Plays a role in the evil action but does not do so deliberately or with direct intention. (Sometimes Sinful) Example: Bus driver who’s route goes by an abortion clinic whereby he drops off women going to get an abortion. (Not Sinful) Example: Selling “surgical” equipment to an abortion clinic. (Sinful) * How direct is the cooperation? What is the intention?

32 Confession Perfect Contrition – Truly being sorry for having offended God whom you greatly love. Imperfect Contrition – Truly being sorry because you are afraid of the pains of hell.

33 Why Doesn’t God just forgive sins, why do I have to go to confession?
Scripture – John 20:21-23 Tradition Face to face contrition Direct reconciliation with God Direct reconciliation with Church/community Power over sin

34 The Last Things Death Judgment Heaven (Purgatory) Hell
We are meant to be with God. Our life here on earth will help determine our eternal destiny.

35 Death End of earthly life. All creatures “change, grow old” and will come to and end. It is the nature of creation. Separation of body and soul Death as we know it now is a consequence of sin. From the beginning man was mortal but would not die. God calls us to Himself through death. This earthly life is a pilgrimage CCC 1013

36 Jesus and Death Death is transformed by Christ. CCC 1009
When we die with and for Christ we are brought to resurrection with Him. Christ has turned the curse of death into a blessing.

37 Judgement Matthew 25:31-46 Particular Judgment
When each soul is judged by Christ immediately upon death. Based on actions and choices of one’s life. Last Judgement Second Coming/Parousia Resurrection of our bodies Kingdom of God will come to its fullness. The Church will be perfected  New Jerusalem

39 Parable of Weeds among Wheat
Mt.13:24 1. notice good and evil coexist until judgment 2. why wait to separate until harvest - see which is wheat vs. weeds Evil is deceptive but appears good Plants look the same Must be vigilant and on guard

40 Hell “To die in mortal sin without repenting and accepting God's merciful love means remaining separated from him for ever by our own free choice. This state of definitive self-exclusion from communion with God and the blessed is called "hell.“ – CCC 1033 Total loss of communion with God. No repentance, eternal punishment for sins. Only hatred and despair can be expressed.

41 Saintly visions - St. Faustina Diary 741 St. Lucia: "[Mary] opened Her hands once more, as She had done the two previous months. The rays [of light] appeared to penetrate the earth, and we saw, as it were, a vast sea of fire. Plunged in this fire, we saw the demons and the souls [of the damned].“The latter were like transparent burning embers, all blackened or burnished bronze, having human forms. They were floating about in that conflagration, now raised into the air by the flames which issued from within themselves, together with great clouds of smoke. Now they fell back on every side like sparks in huge fires, without weight or equilibrium, amid shrieks and groans of pain and despair, which horrified us and made us tremble with fright (it must have been this sight which caused me to cry out, as people say they heard me).“The demons were distinguished [from the souls of the damned] by their terrifying and repellent likeness to frightful and unknown animals, black and transparent like burning coals. That vision only lasted for a moment, thanks to our good Heavenly Mother, Who at the first apparition had promised to take us to Heaven. Without that, I think that we would have died of terror and fear."

42 Purgatory CCC 1030 Final purification , purging of one’s soul before entering heaven, “achieving the holiness necessary to enter into heaven.” Fulfillment of God’s Justice and Mercy A soul goes to purgatory when it is in the state of grace but still has temporal effects/punishment of sin. Like hell but with hope

43 Indulgences A remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven. Must meet certain criteria Plenary – removes all punishment Partial – removes some punishment Can be obtained for yourself or applied to those in purgatory.

44 Ways to Obtain Perform certain action – certain prayers, novenas, on certain days. Venerate relics, go on a pilgrimage, perform certain acts. - Inner disposition to detach from sins - Go to confession - Receive the Eucharist - Pray for the intentions of the Pope

45 Prayer for those In Purgatory
O gentle Heart of Jesus, ever present in the Blessed Sacrament, ever consumed with burning love for the poor captive souls in Purgatory, have mercy on them. Be not severe in Your judgments, but let some drops of Your Precious Blood fall upon the devouring flames. And, Merciful Saviour, send Your angels to conduct them to a place of refreshment, light and peace. Amen.

46 Heaven Those who die in God's grace and friendship and are perfectly purified live for ever with Christ. They are like God for ever, for they "see him as he is," face to face” CCC 1023 State of eternal happiness Perfect communion with God Beatific Vison

47 Heaven Analogies We can only speak of heaven in analogies and say what heaven is like. Heaven is infinitely better than what we can say or imagine about it. Life Light Peace Wedding Feast Wine of the Kingdom Father’s House Paradise

48 “...I was in heaven and I saw its inconceivable beauties and the happiness that awaits us after death. I saw how all creatures give ceaseless praise and glory to God. I saw how great is the happiness in God, which spreads to all creatures, making them happy; and all the glory and praise which springs from this happiness returns to its source; and they enter into the depths of God, contemplating the inner life of God (...). This source of happiness is unchanging in its essence, but it is always new, gushing forth happiness for all creatures” Revelation 21
