1 Weeks 16 - 18 Standards: Essential Questions:
Scaled Goals: SC.8.E.5.1 Recognize that there are enormous distances between objects in space and apply our knowledge of light and space travel to understand this distance. SC.8.E.5.2 Recognize that the universe contains many billions of galaxies and that each galaxy contains many billions of stars. SC.8.E.5.3 Distinguish the hierarchical relationships between planets and other astronomical bodies relative to solar system, galaxy, and universe, including distance, size, and composition. SC.8.E.5.5 Describe and classify specific physical properties of stars: apparent magnitude (brightness), temperature (color), size, and luminosity (absolute brightness). SC.8.E.5.10 Assess how technology is essential to science for such purposes as access to outer space and other remote locations, sample collection, measurement, data collection and storage, computation, and communication of information. SC.8.E.5.12 Summarize the effects of space exploration on the economy and culture of Florida. Students Will Be Able to: 1.0 – Identify and list key objects and facts about our Galaxy and Universe while defining relevant vocabulary. 2.0 – Categorize galaxies and predict the life cycles of stars. Organize how matter is distributed in the universe. 3.0 – Cite the evidence for reliable knowledge through spectroscopy and mathematics. Draw conclusions about space travel and exploration based on history and economics. 4.0 – Apply concepts learned to lab work, observations and demonstrations. Essential Questions: -What makes up the universe? -How do the properties of stars allow us to organize them? Vocabulary: Universe, Milky Way, Galaxy, HR Diagram, Nebula, Star, Constellation, Magnitude, Brightness, Luminosity, Parallax, Universe, Big Bang, Doppler, Cosmology, Proxima Centauri, Black Hole, Local Group, Magellanic Cloud, Binary, Red Giant, Supernova, Interstellar, Intergalactic, Neutron Star, Andromeda, Nuclear Fusion, Spiral, Barred Spiral, Irregular, Globular Cluster, Quasar, Drake Equation Text Support: Chapter 3 Lessons 1,2,4,5
