Slenderman PowerPoint
By Griffen A. Farley

Introduction Slender Man: a creature or being with various nebulously defined characteristics and abilities. Slender Man is a well documented anomaly, typically associated in society as a paranormal-like being and most oft dubbed as pseudoscience. Sightings and reports vary from modern day to the age of ancient Egypt. Most everything in this PowerPoint is fact, make of it what you will.

History and Origin Pt. 1 Slender Man accounts have been seen from modern day era, to the late 1500s, and from ancient Egypt. The latter typically found in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, as shown right. Though not confirmed as a Slender entity, though likeness is uncanny, showing a tall, dark-like being with long and slim appendages sprouting in place of arms, along with the figure displaying extraordinary height.

History and Origins Pt. 2 Slender sightings in the late 1500s and early 1600s were commonly found in Bavaria, Germany. The witnesses of such occurrences would most oft associate the events with the German folklore of Der Ritter. A fairy-like being who would torment and stalk lying children until they confessed. As shown to the right, Slender Man is depicted as a skeletal-like being with long appendages (arms possibly?) penetrating and killing a soldier.

History and Origins Pt. 3 Translated from old German journal entry, may be inaccurate. "My child, my Lars...He is gone. Taken, from his bed. The only thing that we found was a scrap of black clothing. It feels like cotton, but it is softer...thicker. Lars came into my bedroom yesterday, screaming at the top of his lungs that "The angel is outside!", I asked him what he was talking about, and he told me some nonsense fairy story about Der Großmann. He said he went into the groves by our village and found one of my cows dead, hanging from a tree. I thought nothing of it at first...But now, he is gone. We must find Lars, and my family must leave before we are killed. I am sorry my son...I should have listened. May God forgive me."

Description and Attributes
There are many descriptions of Slender-like beings in multiple folklore and legends, the following attributes consist of the most common descriptions and observations. Slender Man is shown in a passive aggressive light, stalking targets for years, and mentally torturing them for unknown reasons. Slender Man is rarely ever shown in a “benevolent” light and is instead, rather “malevolent.” Slender Man lives unlike any other human being, despite having a similar appearance to one. Slender Man’s appearance is variable, the most recent being depicted in a black business suit. His appearance most oft provokes multiple reactions, typically fear.

Motivation Slender Man’s motivations remain widely unknown, though he makes a habit of going after children. He tends to stalk children from a young age, following them to where they are oblivious of him until it’s too late. He enjoys tormenting his victims and along with children, will attack adults with problems such as: alcoholics, pedophiles, child abusers, etc. Though usually in a passive aggressive manner, Slender Man is prone to anger, charging at an individual via teleportation or “Slender Walking” and will provide such individuals particularly grisly deaths or complete disappearance of the victim.

Sightings Pt. 1 Confirmed reports are as previously mentioned in Egypt and Renaissance Germany. Along with such countries reports have been recorded in folklore and photograph from, Mesopotamia, China, Japan, Great Britain, Ireland, Canada, Native American tribes, South America, much of Europe (especially Germany) and Russia, as well as Africa and the Middle East. All of which date back to the mentioned area’s earliest to earliest time period.

Sightings Pt. 2 Photographs from the early 1900s indicate “Slender” sightings along with reports of multiple child disappearances. Most oft of these reports and photos were found in America, Great Britain, and Russia. By the mid 1900s, during WWII, multiple disappearance reports of soldiers were filed in Nazi Germany, along with children vanishing along forested regions along Canada and the United States. As well as a spree of burning buildings with multiple deaths and few witnesses, it could be gathered that Slender Man was “enjoying himself” in this time period.

Sightings Pt. 3

Sightings Pt. 4 The following passage and quote come from the Johanne Goethe poem and song, inspired by Slender Man and the latter quote from a 1983 photographer who shot a few of the photos show in the previous slide: "My son, wherefore seek'st thou thy face thus to hide?" "Look, father, the Erl King is close by our side! Dost see not the Erl King, with crown and with train?" "My son, 'tis the mist rising over the plain.“ Photographer: "we didn't want to go, we didn't want to kill them, but its persistent silence and outstretched arms horrified and comforted us at the same time...“ The mentioned photographer is presumed dead.

Sightings Pt. 5 On June 15, 1953 police arrived at the Henderson Horse Farm due to complaints of screams and gunshots from neighbors. Inside they found Ted Henderson cradling the corpse of his wife in his arms with a shotgun wound in her chest., barricaded in his room. His daughter was nowhere to be found. Ted was arrested for the murder of his wife but was admitted to Jenkins Mental Hospital due to his catatonic state. On the third anniversary of his wife’s death he referred to a "Skinny fella… suit… looking at me…“. Ted claimed that his wife begged him to shoot her after “the skinny fella” had broken in and absconded with his daughter, whilst Slender Man had tortured her mentally whilst glaring at her. After his tale he proceeded to bang his face repeatedly into the steel table. He later committed suicide in his cell by chewing through his wrists. The daughter was never found and a picture taken a week before the incident shows Slender Man standing in front of the stables.

Symptoms Some symptoms, whether some may be real or not, usually can help tell if one is victimized by Slender Man: Coughing up blood Broken/faulty technology Memory loss Nightmares Drawing the Operator Symbol (see slide: 22) Diarrhea Vomiting

Aliases Slender Man has been resurgent throughout the histories of multiple cultures, nations, and empires. He has gone by many names, listed below are my best efforts to bring forth at least some of his aliases. Fear Dubh- Scotland Takkenmann- Dutch Der Grossemann- Germany Thief of Gods- Egypt Windigo- Britain Oni- China Other The Operator Der Ritter Bundle The Tall Man Slendy Slender The Pale One The White King Master Him Not all are mentioned due to my lack of ability to find the website where previous aliases were listed.

The Rake Pt. 1 The Rake, as well as Slender Man, is a documented anomaly, though not as well covered as the latter. The Rake is suspected to be associated with Slender Man in some way, whether that Slender Man indirectly controls the Rake, or if he knows some way to abate or combat him. It is also suspected that the Rake fears Slender Man, and is the lesser of the two evils. The Rake has been described (shown in back) as a simian-like being, almost always shown crawling on all fours. It is noted to bear similarity to a skinned animal, oft times a dog, and is noted as looking as it had been run over by a vehicle due towards it’s unnatural stance, posture, and bearing. It has also been depicted with large metallic-like claws located on it’s hands.

The Rake Pt. 2 The Rake’s association with Slender Man is to say….. unclear. Though not a confirmed interaction, the Rake is said to be a creature, under the influence of Slender Man, a slave or what-have-you. Theories and conjecture regarding the Rake give thoughts on that the Rake is a Proxy (see slide: 18) mutated throughout contact with Slender Man. Or through self mutilation turned to a creature who overtime took towards a lack of semblance towards a human being. He is also theorized to be an alien. It is also speculated that there are multiple Rakes (much like it’s theorized, though I rather doubt it, that there are multiple “Slender Men”) and each have operated throughout the past few centuries.

The Rake Pt. 3 The Rake has been reported from it’s far earlier account, from 1100 to 1200 A.D, but provided testimony comes from 1961 at it’s far earliest: "A Mariner's Log: 1691 He came to me in my sleep. From the foot of my bed I felt a sensation. He took everything. We must return to England. We shall not return here again at the request of the Rake."

The Rake Pt. 4 From a Witness: 2006 Three years ago, I had just returned from a trip from Niagara Falls with my family for the 4th of July. We were all very exhausted after a long day of driving, so my husband and I put the kids right to bed and called it a night. At about 4am, I woke up thinking my husband had gotten up to use the restroom. I used the moment to steal back the sheets, only to wake him in the process. I appologized and told him I though he got out of bed. When he turned to face me, he gasped and pulled his feet up from the end of the bed so quickly his knee almost knocked me out of the bed. He then grabbed me and said nothing. After adjusting to the dark for a half second, I was able to see what caused the strange reaction. At the foot of the bed, sitting and facing away from us, there was what appeared to be a naked man, or a large hairless dog of some sort. It’s body position was disturbing and unnatural, as if it had been hit by a car or something. For some reason, I was not instantly frightened by it, but more concerned as to its condition. At this point I was somewhat under the assumption that we were supposed to help him. My husband was peering over his arm and knee, tucked into the fetal position, occasionally glancing at me before returning to the creature. In a flurry of motion, the creature scrambled around the side of the bed, and then crawled quickly in a flailing sort of motion right along the bed until it was less than a foot from my husband’s face. The creature was completely silent for about 30 seconds (or probably closer to 5, it just seemed like a while) just looking at my husband. The creature then placed its hand on his knee and ran into the hallway, leading to the kids’ rooms. I screamed and ran for the lightswitch, planning to stop him before he hurt my children. When I got to the hallway, the light from the bedroom was enough to see it crouching and hunched over about 20 feet away. He turned around and looked directly at me, covered in blood. I flipped the switch on the wall and saw my daughter Clara. The creature ran down the stairs while my husband and I rushed to help our daughter. She was very badly injured and spoke only once more in her short life. She said “he is the Rake”. My husband drove his car into a lake that night, while rushing our daughter to the hospital. He did not survive. Being a small town, news got around pretty quickly. The police were helpful at first, and the local newspaper took a lot of interest as well. However, the story was never published and the local television news never followed up either. For several months, my son Justin and I stayed in a hotel near my parent’s house. After we decided to return home, I began looking for answers myself. I eventually located a man in the next town over who had a similar story. We got in contact and began talking about our experiences. He knew of two other people in New York who had seen the creature we now referred to as the Rake. It took the four of us about two solid years of hunting on the internet and writing letters to come up with a small collection of what we believe to be accounts of the Rake. None of them gave any details, history or follow up. One journal had an entry involving the creature in its first 3 pages, and never mentioned it again. A ship’s log explained nothing of the encounter, saying only that they were told to leave by the Rake. That was the last entry in the log. There were, however, many instances where the creature’s visit was one of a series of visits with the same person. Multiple people also mentioned being spoken to, my daughter included. This led us to wonder if the Rake had visited any of us before our last encounter. I set up a digital recorder near my bed and left it running all night, every night, for two weeks. I would tediously scan through the sounds of me rolling around in my bed each day when I woke up. By the end of the second week, I was quite used to the occasional sound of sleep while blurring through the recording at 8 times the normal speed. (This still took almost an hour every day) On the first day of the third week, I thought I heard something different. What I found was a shrill voice. It was the Rake. I can’t listen to it long enough to even begin to transcribe it. I haven’t let anyone listen to it yet. All I know is that I’ve heard it before, and I now believe that it spoke when it was sitting in front of my husband. I don’t remember hearing anything at the time, but for some reason, the voice on the recorder immediately brings me back to that moment. The thoughts that must have gone through my daughter’s head make me very upset. I have not seen the Rake since he ruined my life, but I know that he has been in my room while I slept. I know and fear that one night I’ll wake up to see him staring at me.

The Rake Pt. 5 A Journal Entry (translated from Spanish): 1880 I have experience the greatest terror. I have experienced the greatest terror. I have experienced the greatest terror. I see his eyes when I close mine. They are hollow. Black. They saw me and pierced me. His wet hand. I will not sleep. His voice (unintelligible text). A Suicide Note: 1964 As I prepare to take my life, I feel it necessary to assuage any guilt or pain I have introduced through this act. It is not the fault of anyone other than him. For once I awoke and felt his presence. And once I awoke and saw his form. Once again I awoke and heard his voice, and looked into his eyes. I cannot sleep without fear of what I might next awake to experience. I cannot ever wake. Goodbye. Found in the same wooden box were two empty envelopes addressed to William and Rose, and one loose personal letter with no envelope. ‘Dearest Linnie, I have prayed for you. He spoke your name.’

Slender Man in Society Pt. 1
The Endermen, brought into the game: Minecraft are based upon Slender Man. In Doctor Who the Season 6 creatures, known as the Silence, are visually similar to Slender Man. In the music video of Equinox by Skrillex, Slender Man makes an appearance, by forcing a little girl to kill a child molester. Slender Man is the primary focus of the computer games: Slender and the lesser known Slenderman

Slender Man in Society Pt. 2
The Slender Game’s main text An Enderman from Minecraft The title screen of the computer game: Slenderman The Silence from Season 6 of the Doctor Who television series The music video: “Equinox”, featuring Slender Man.

Proxies Pt. 1 Proxies are theorized to be persons under the influence of Slender Man, usually directly or indirectly controlled by him, usually acting on Slender Man’s needs/wants. Most oft they’re used as henchman serving as go- betweens used to carry out Slender Man’s “dirty work”, usually involving manipulating/destroying objects, destroying/leaving evidence, and influencing victims as needed. Proxies probably got their start from early Slender Man stories, describing people under mental influence of Slender Man. Early reports depict Slender Man leading children out of houses through mental control.

Proxies Pt. 2 Each Proxy seems to have an individual symbol whether it be their own such as the Observer symbol (to the left) or if they choose to take up their master’s own icon (to the right).

MarbleHornets MarbleHornets is a Slender Man-based Youtube series/ARG. It was the first Slender Man ARG to be created and is by far the best. It is the leader of the “Big Three” main ARGs and chiefly responsible for shaping the modern mythos. MarbleHornets is based around the filming of Jay the main protagonist, known as “entries.” To this date there are 64 entries, along with two “.5” entries, one anonymous ######## entry, and 30 accompanying the series’ unknown antagonist totheark, featuring an “alternate ending.”

Unconfirmed Slender Man Assumptions
Slender Man is vulnerable to “cold iron”. Slender Man is genderless Slender Man is a godly entity from any negative space in religion Slender Man is a ghost Slender Man is human Slender Man is immortal Slender Man is not intelligent and follows orders from a higher power Slender Man is not aggressive but lonely, acting out of instinct Slender Man is a government conspiracy Slender Man’s abilities are suppressed near water Slender Man will not attack a target, assuming they show no fear Slender Man can use mind control Slender Man can read minds Slender Man can be killed, although one must aquire specific “powers” Slender Man doesn’t exist in physical form Slender Man captures various prepubescent organisms If one sees Slender Man they become a target Slender Man can have his invisibility exposed by cameras

The Tulpa Effect A tulpa is a thought-form, or being created from the separate thoughts of individuals. One theory of Slender Man (and personally the one that makes the most sense) is that Slender Man is a tulpa product from the collective of negative thought formed over the centuries. Tulpas are theoretical in nature, although some semi- scientific research and studies were conducted from the 1960s The idea was formed when thrown around Something Awful Forums. The idea is still carried today by some Slender Man- based communities, specifically Slender Nation. Some worry that due to popularity of the Slender Man Mythos, a Slender Woman may be created. Others believe that the Tulpa Effect will have serious repercussions due to the creation of Slender Man. Competing Theories include Quantum and Core Theory. The former providing the only scientific explanation available on Slender Man, and the latter being based off of the Tulpa Effect.

Conclusion In conclusion to this PowerPoint, I must add that this is the accumulated work of an estimated 17 hours research-wise. If for some reason this PowerPoint doesn’t stack up art wise, at least give me brownie points for the work put in. Likewise stated at the beginning of this PowerPoint, all of the information in this presentation is true. If anything I’d inform you to take a look at MarbleHornets on Youtube. All of it being fake and what-not but it’s still interesting. Thus ends my PowerPoint Presentation on Slender Man.
