GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE EXISTING SITUATION Drinking water treatment plants Old and obsolete equipment; Frequent damages; Drinking water does not meet the necessary quality according to the EU Drinking Water Directive; Transmission pipes Long sectors made of asbestos cement or steel, with frequent damages; Considerable leakages on the transmission pipes; Insufficient development of the systems / more transmission pipes required. Storage tanks Damages of the storage tanks; Hydraulic installation corroded, with long service life and with often damages; Insufficient development of the systems / more reservoirs required.

16. EXISTING SITUATION Pumping stations Poor condition of the buildings of the pumping stations; Equipment with long service life, low efficiency and high energy consumption; Insufficient development of the systems / more pumping stations required. Distribution network Pipes made of unsuitable materials (steel, asbestos cement), with long service life, corroded and in poor condition; High leakages; Insufficient coverage of the residential areas.

EXISTING SITUATION Sewerage network Insufficient coverage of the residential areas in all agglomerations; Considerable length of the network over 20 years old; No adequate equipment for operation and maintenance; Frequent blockages and damages. Wastewater pumping stations Equipment with long service life with high energy consumption due to low efficiency; Mechanical and electrical installations is extensively corroded; Frequent damages and interruptions in operation. Wastewater treatment plant Totally or partially out of order in all agglomerations; Non-compliance with the requirements of NTPA 001/2002 and EU Wastewater Directive; More WWTPs required.

OBJECTIVES AND ACHIEVEMENTS Overall objective To improve the infrastructure in the water sector for the benefit of the environment and man in order to meet the water compliance obligations in the Accession Treaty and the objectives of the SOP Environment. Main achievements In the field of water supply Provision of drinking water meeting the standards of EC Drinking Water Directive 98/83/EC; Providing with good quality drinking water to the population; Assurance of quality and availability for water related services according to the principles of maximum cost efficiency and quality in operation and population affordability; Improved security of supply through replacement of structurally defective mains; Reduced physical water losses.

OBJECTIVES AND ACHIEVEMENTS In the field of wastewater collection and treatment Better quality of surface waters and environment by minimizing the effects of human settlements; Mitigation of health risk by extending the sewerage network to serve population currently dependent on on-plot waste disposal facilities with reduction in associated risk of surface and ground water pollution; Reduction of infiltration in the system; Compliance with the treatment standards of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive 91/271/EEC for discharge into non-sensitive water body; Reduced pollution of the rivers Vulcanita, Ghimbasel, Olt and Danube due poorly treated wastewater effluent.
