2 FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3 Assign Yourself Finish Critical Thinking Question Due Tomorrow Take Out Materials Biorganizer – Cornell Notes page 108 Title: LEVELS OF ORGANIZATION

3 objective SWBAT analyze the levels of organization in biological systems and relate the levels to each other and to the whole system.

4 Question:What are the levels of organization in biological systems?
Answer:  The levels of organization in biological systems, from smallest to largest, are atoms, molecules, cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, and organism.

5 Expand Organisms are arranged in levels of organization that help scientists to describe the structures and functions within an organism. Atoms are at the base of the hierarchy. Atoms join together to form molecules (biomolecules). Biomolecules are arranged into the components of a cell. Groups of cells form tissue. Tissues that work together to perform a specific function are organs.  Groups of organs working together to perform a specific function are called organ systems.  Each organ system carries out a specific function to keep the organism alive.

8 heck Yes/heck no (Choral Responses)
Atoms make up the most basic level of organization in living systems. Organisms is at the top of the levels of organization. Levels of organization tell us how the different levels work together/interact. Each level of organization has its own function that benefits the whole system.

14 Independent practice Critical Thinking
Answer the following question in 2-3 paragraphs. Use the following words in your explanation. List all the levels in order and how they relate to each other. What are the levels of organization in biological systems? How do the levels of organization relate to each other?

15 Exit ticket Choose the correct answer and give a detailed explanation for your answer using the following vocabulary words:

16 A

17 Ipc B.9C/10C Illustrated Vocabulary Card
Divide the word into its parts Find the meaning of each part Illustrate the parts The students do a "quickdraw" on a sheet of white paper. As with the vocabulary card, I ask them to draw concepts rather than illustrations.

18 ipc Vocabulary Card Write the definition at the top
Divide the word into its parts Write the root of the word in capital letters in red in the middle of the card. write the meaning of the root. Write the prefix in black to the left of the root and write the meaning of the prefix. Write the suffix in blue to the right of the root and write the meaning of the suffix. In the lower left corner, write three words with the same root. Do a quickdraw of the concept of the word, not the definition in the lower right of the card. Write the author's definition.
