1 Reading Strategies

2 What do you think of when you hear the word ‘strategy’ ?
Do Now: What do you think of when you hear the word ‘strategy’ ? Can you think of some examples or instances where you might use a strategy for something?

3 Reading strategies are used to HELP YOU to understand and comprehend what you are reading.
By using certain ‘methods’ or ‘tricks’, they will help you tremendously in your understanding of a text.

4 LET’S HAVE A LOOK…

5 Connecting Connecting/linking the story or text with other stories, movies, current events, personal experiences, etc… In other words, what does the text remind you of?

6 Creating Mental Images
What vivid images are created in your mind? VISUALIZE Strong imagery!!!!

7 Questioning Simply put, what questions did you have about the story/text while reading?

8 Inferring MAKING PREDICTIONS and INFERENCES based on clues from the text.

9 When we INFER we are drawing our own conclusion based on what the text is suggesting or implying.
When something is stated EXPLICITLY or DIRECTLY you will never have to make an inference.

10 Inference Example: One more hour until 4th block concludes. Jack anxiously stared at the clock in anticipation for the bell. He could barely focus on the lesson because he knew that this weekend he’d be on a flight to visit his family in Florida. We can INFER that it is what day of the week?

11 Making Inferences https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3u1_181N7g
Although it’s not explicitly stated or shown, what inference can you make from watching this scene? Write down any evidence that supports your inference.

12 SUMMARIZING/Synthesizing
Making summaries of what you have read. Explaining the story or text in your own words. You do this all the time! Every time you summarize a great movie, TV show, book, or real life event you are synthesizing!!!!

13 Determining for Importance
What parts of the story or text did you recognize as being MORE important than others? Certain parts of the story carry more weight and are more integral for the development of the plot, characters, themes, climax, etc…

14 We will be using these strategies throughout the ENTIRE year, as you should be using these strategies OUTSIDE the classroom in your independent reading. I will continuously be using these terms in our class, so you must become familiarized with them and what is being asked of you to do with them.
