Crossing strategy for determining inheritance of virulence genes. (A) Avirulent females (PA3) were crossed with (B) highly virulent males (TN20), and the F1 offspring were phenotyped using an HG type test. (C) F1 males and females were then crossed, and the resulting F2 generation was backcrossed to PA3 in a BC1F2 strategy [drawing adapted from Dong and Opperman (1997)].
