2 Introduction Paragraph
We will all be writing a paper on the dehumanization of the Jewish people during the Holocaust. The introduction will be 3-5 sentences. Remember that you will need to write a thesis statement that will be the LAST sentence of the paragraph. Words that will need to be in your thesis: dehumanization, loss of possessions and family, Loss of identity, Loss of integrity.

3 Dehumanization The process of depriving a person or group of people of positive human qualities. (To take away their humanity)

4 Loss of Identity Our identity defines us and helps us connect with others. Loss of identity means a feeling of confusion about who you are and what your purpose it.

5 Loss of Integrity Integrity means self-worth, consistently being who you are regardless of the situation. A loss of integrity means that you are broken. You are not whole.

6 Primary Source The first set of notes we will be taking is from the memoir Night. This is a primary Source. Definition: Original evidence – first person account of events. An eyewitness account.

7 Secondary Source Information that is created later by someone who did not experience first- hand or participate in the events related to Night. Secondary sources are generally scholarly books and articles.

8 Loss of Possessions and family Write these notes in the column on your sheet.
1. The Jews lose everything – Personal items, valuables, business and homes (Can you find specific examples in the book?) They are forced to move into the ghettos. 2. Babies are used for target practice and shot by the Nazi’s. 3. Elie and the other Jews are separated from family members in the selection process. Elie loses his mother and sister, Tzipora

4. Elie loses his shoes and gold crown in the camps. 5. Elie’s father dies in the camp from dysentery.

10 Examples of Loss of Identity. Write down these examples from the memoir.
1. Jews are made to wear the Yellow star to identify them. 2. Jews were called animals and verbally degraded 3. Elie and other Jews are tattooed with a number to replace their name. 4. They were made to undress in front of everyone 5. Elie and his father are forced to lie about their ages and occupation to survive. 6. All the prisoners had their heads shaved and given identical clothes.

7. The Jews were never given proper burials 8. The Jews had no voice in their treatment 9. Elie does not recognize himself in the end. 10. They lost their will to live and their spirits were broken

12 Examples of Loss of Integrity (self-worth) Add to your notes
1. They had to throw bodies off the train and wagons. 2. Babies were used as target practice. 3. The prisoners were to dig their own graves 4. They were put in gas chambers to die. 5. People were packed in cattle cars for transport 6. Loss of humanity (very broad statement – find examples in text)

7. Stripped of clothes and forced to run naked around the camps. 8. They were forced to watch other prisoners die 9. Forced to work to survive 10. Loss of faith and religion 11. Loss of humanity 12. The prisoners were forced to live and work in horrible conditions.

13. They had to take the clothes/shoes off dead bodies 14. The prisoners had to eat off each others backs for water 15. They had to fight for food scraps – a son kills his father for a crust of bread 16. Made to march in horrible conditions.
