COMPUTER NETWORKS AND INTERNET

Introduction to computer networks and networking concepts, general understanding and examples, brainstorming, group work and presentation, simple switching network, overview of the whole syllabus and relation between different networking concepts and essentials

Objectives: To be acquainted with:  The Concept of Networking  Requirements for networking  Advantages and Importance  Disadvantages Wednesday, January 17, 2018 3

 A computer network, or simply a network, is a collection of computers and other hardware components interconnected by communication channels that allow sharing of resources and information, where at least one process in one device is able to send/receive data to/from at least one process residing in a remote device, then the two devices are said to be in a network.

 Student’s work and brain storming  Students will find examples of computer networking from their experience,  Give examples from our real life  Find why we use computer networking  Present their ideas in the class

Sharing of devices (printers & scanners) Sharing of program/software Sharing Hardware Sharing of files Sharing of data Sharing information Can access server centered database Better communication using Internet services such as email, mailing list & Internet relate chat (IRC)

 Connectivity and Communication  Internet Access Sharing  Sharing of single high speed Internet connection  Data Security and Management  Performance Enhancement and Balancing  Entertainment Wednesday, January 17, 2018 9

 Network Hardware, Software and Setup Costs  Hardware and Software Management and Administration Costs  Undesirable Sharing  Illegal or Undesirable Behavior  Data Security Concerns Wednesday, January 17, 2018 10

Local Area Networks (LANs):  A local area network (LAN) is a computer network covering a small geographic area, like a home, office, or group of buildings Wide Area Networks (WANs):  Wide Area Network (WAN) is a computer network that covers a broad area (i.e., any network whose communications links cross metropolitan, regional, or national boundaries). Or, less formally, a network that uses routers and public communications links  The largest and most well-known example of a WAN is the Internet. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN): o A metropolitan area network (MAN) is a network that interconnects users with computer resources in a geographic area or region. Larger than that covered by even a large local area network (LAN) but smaller than the area covered by a wide area network (WAN ). Wednesday, January 17, 2018 11
