3. New Academic Calendar – UNSW3+15
months
UNSW Sydney is transitioning to a new academic calendar, UNSW3+, starting in 2019.
The new calendar consists of three normal terms each with ten weeks teaching, and an optional five-week summer term in January.

4. What does it mean? TERMS NORMAL LOAD CURRICULUM ASSESSMENT INTAKES
A key priority of UNSW’s 2025 Strategy is to give students an opportunity to personalise and tailor their university experience, and provide graduates with the attributes necessary for success in the 21st century. The development of the UNSW3+ academic calendar is the first step in this process.
UNSW 3+ will offer:
TERMS
3 x 10 teaching week terms
Optional 5 week summer term
NORMAL LOAD
The same as now – 8 courses
But the option would exist to go up to 9 courses a year
Opportunity to balance workload
CURRICULUM
Course length reduces from 12 to 10 weeks
But contact hours per course is unchanged
ASSESSMENT
Exam period remains 2 weeks
Redesign of assessments required to allow for marking
INTAKES
Two primary intakes: T1 and T3
Postgraduate T2 intake dependent on faculties and student demand
EXPERIENCES
One could free up a term for:
Internships
Extra-curricular
Exchange
GLOBALISATION
Better alignment for exchange and inbound international students
CAMPUS USE
The campus would remain active for 30 rather than 24 weeks per year

6. FEES, VISAS AND BENEFITS
COURSE FEES
Course fees will not be affected by UNSW3+.
The normal study load will continue to be eight courses per year and the minimum full-time study load will continue to be six courses per year.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarship payments will be aligned with the new term dates, but the value of UNSW scholarships paid over a year will not change. Those on external scholarships (Commonwealth Government, external industry scholarships) should not be affected so long as students maintain their full-time status. The value and length of scholarships should not change under UNSW3+.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Visa requirements will not change, as all programs will be completed within the same time as current. However, some programs such as double majors may be able to finish slightly earlier. Students will still need to maintain full-time status as described above.

7. UNIVERSITY BREAKS TIMING SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
The length of the summer holiday break will reduce from 14 weeks to nine weeks. Mid-year breaks are still four weeks, but will instead be in two blocks of two weeks.
SUMMER
The summer term will be five weeks and offer short, optional intensive courses with limited offerings. The courses available will depend on what individual Faculties and Schools decide to offer. Students will not be required to study in summer, and if they chose not to study, they would still have a nine-week summer break.
OPPORTUNITIES
UNSW3+ will provide students with more opportunities to enhance their graduate attributes, including internships, exchange, and other extra-curricular experiences.
With 10% fewer contact hours per week for a load of three courses, compared with four courses today, the lower weekly study load will give students more time to work throughout the year, placing less pressure on part-time work in the holiday breaks.
Students will also have the opportunity to lower their term load whilst still retaining full-time student status, allowing them to take on part-time work during times of the year that suits them.

11. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How can you fit 12 weeks of content into 10?
We are reviewing and revising the entire curriculum. The intention is that all the best courses will be reconfigured and upgraded to fit in the 10 week terms. If necessary, new courses will be created and some obsolete courses will be discontinued. In parallel with the new calendar a number of innovative on-line courses are being developed through the Inspired Learning initiative to UNSW3+ provide even greater flexibility and personalisation of learning.
Will UNSW3+ delay my degree completion?
Depending on number of courses that you need to complete in 2019, degree completion may be delayed by 10 weeks. We will be looking at how courses can be delivered (online/intensive/Summer Term) to ensure that the number of students impacted will be kept to a minimum.
How will exams work?
There will be a two-week exam period per term. However, students will be sitting a maximum of three exams, compared to four under the current calendar. Examinations are being reassessed. Faculty academics are looking at types of assessment, marking timeframes, etc.

12. Will my fees increase?
Course fees will not change due to UNSW3+.
Are my internship opportunities affected because of the shorter Summer? 
Students who choose to take up to nine courses per year will create space in their degree to use a term for an internship without delaying graduation. Students would complete a preparatory course, short intensive course or online course during this term and hence be able to retain their student benefits.
Students taking an internship during Term 1, Term 2 or Term 3 will face less competition for internship places against other Australian university students who don’t have the flexibility to take an internship outside of summer.
Part of our two year rollout is to talk with employers about having internships at other times of the year, i.e. not over Christmas when Australian based business are very quiet for a month. Initial discussions have been very positive.

13. Am I going to feel more stressed under the new calendar?
Courses will be adjusted to fit 10 week terms, with a similar number of contact hours for each course over the term as there is currently. However with a maximum of three courses to study each term instead of four, students will have more time to devote to each course, improving the depth of understanding and learning.
The new calendar will give students the flexibility to spread their study load over more of the year and the opportunity to achieve a better study/life balance.
I have already started my degree. How will the new calendar affect me?
For current students who will still be studying into 2019, transition plans will be provided before 2018 enrolment.
