Her professional life is devoted to understanding and improving the gender composition in computing and other technologies. One of her major accomplishments is the award-winning book she co-edited with William Aspray, titled “Women and Information Technology: Research on underrepresentation.” Jim Cohoon is a professor in the Computer Science department. He is our undergraduate program director and associate chair as well as an author of some award winning textbooks. One of his major focuses is establishing an introductory computing curriculum that attracts and interests all types of people. His efforts were recognized just last month. The IEEE Computer Society gave jointly to him and another of our faculty members Jack Davidson its highest education award.

Jan is the program director of NSF’s Broadening Participation in Computing program and a faculty member on leave from Oregon State. The BPC program is funding this project. Jan will be here to talk about her 10K Teacher Initiative – an effort to greatly increase the presence of computing in middle and high school education.

Professor Lambert has a long history with Computer Science Unplugged. CS Unplugged offers a great assortment of engaging physical activities for getting across computing concepts. On Thursday Karen Davis of the University of Cincinnati will be here. Professor Davis has a Broadening of Participation in Computing funded project for identifying and developing an interesting set of active learning exercises for promoting the understanding of computing concepts.

We welcome them back and thank them for sharing their experiences. Ms. Lathan is on the faculty at Archbishop Carroll High School of Washington, DC and Robert Luciano is on the faculty at Pocono Mountain East High School, Swiftwater, PA.

Both David and Wes are active in running our BA in CS degree. The department is proud of David’s recent honor – The Commonwealth of Virginia has recognized him as a Professor of the Year. Wes is also an active member of our Department’s Diversity Committee. Mark is our newest faculty member. Mark’s courses are very popular and often have a software engineering focus.

Bill has made many, many accomplishments in education, research, and public service. As former head of the NSF’s Computer Science Directorate and as President of the National Academy of Engineering he has had a profound affect on public policy as its relates to science and technology. Right after lunch he will be our keynote speaker.

Trouble ahead A major part of our country’s success and strength has been based on the ideas and efforts of its scientists and engineers. In the 21st century computing professionals and information technologists are going to be especially important. However, the US Bureau of Labor and Statistics forecasts over the next ten years or so that three of the top six professions with job growth require undergraduate computing degrees. But there is insufficient interest in computing to meet that demand. Disinterest by women and under-represented minorities is even more pronounced. Winslow Homer, The Coming Storm, NGA

13 Racial diversity in the IT Workforce
Distribution shows African Americans and Hispanics are highly under represented Commission on Professionals in Science and Technology

14 Female major intentions
Highly capable women are looking into other fields instead of CS NCWIT 2007 Score card

15 Purpose redux Attract more and diverse students into computing Influence perceptions of computing’s importance and its opportunities Better engage students in the excitement and rewards of computing Lets work on this over the next days and continue to do so back at our home institutions. The Tree of Life, 1854

16 There is no free lunch Next up Joanne McGrath Cohoon is going to take over and lead some lunch-time activities designed to get us to know each other
