Working together to safeguard children (HM Gov 2018):
“ Effective sharing of information between practitioners and local organisations and agencies is essential for early identification of need, assessment and service provision to keep children safe”.
Interprofessional working represented in professional codes e. g NMC 2015 and HCPC (2017)
Interprofessional working promoted to improve mental health care in UK (Priest et al 2011 )

10. Serious Case Reviews (SCR)
Problems with inter-professional communication and its impact upon decision making is a common theme in serious case reviews (SCRs).(NCPCC 2018)
Failings in interprofessional working featured predominantly in enquiries into the death of Victoria Climibie and Baby P. (Laming 2003 and Bell and Allain 2010) ,
Hamzah Khan’s SCR (2013) highlights the practical difficulties that can lead to interprofessional practice not protecting the child
“Workload pressure and contractual or commissioning arrangements can influence the capacity and focus of professional’s ability to respond to information or lack of engagement” (SCR Hamzah Khan Executive Summary 2013)

Keys (2009) suggests that key skills involved in effective interprofessional communication related to safeguarding/child protection are:

Able to see the perspective of others
Challenging others

12. Working interprofessionally: A real life view
Each member of the panel will be asked to talk individually for 5 minutes on why in their view inter-professional working consistently features as an area of weakness in research and Serious Case Reviews
You (the students) will then be invited to ask questions of the panel in relation to the points they have raised.
Towards the end of the session the panel will then be asked to offer a 5 minute summary each of how they feel good inter-professional practice can be promoted in the future.
