Unit Question: How do fictional stories teach us real lessons? Do Now: January 27th, 2019 Please write down your homework in your agenda. Then open to a clean page in your binder.

2 Homework Use the 5 vocabulary words from the story, “The Richer, the Poorer” in a paragraph that summarizes what the story was about. Please make sure the vocabulary words are being used correctly and that you include context clues within your summary.

3 Why are books (especially children’s books) an effective way of learning the importance of values?

4 They are creative, imaginative, interesting, memorable, and fun
Kids are impressionable. Kids are innocent.

5 Why do books use fantasy and imaginary characters instead of real life examples?
(Ex. Child not eating broccoli or green eggs and ham.)

6 Children’s books use a lot of metaphors.

7 Books use metaphors to make the lessons more fun and memorable.
Define metaphor-

8 Metaphor- comparing unlike things without using like or as
Metaphor- comparing unlike things without using like or as. Using an object to represent something else. Allegories use a lot of metaphors.

9 Allegory- a narrative in which characters and events represent/symbolize a deeper moral and meaning.

10 Explain this quote and relate it to the real world.
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

11 This quote appears in The Lorax by Dr. Seuss.
As we read The Lorax out loud, think about the values it promotes.

Please open to your literature section. In one paragraph reflection, answer the following questions. Write your reaction to the story “The Lorax”. What is the author, Dr. Seuss, trying to tell us in this story? What real life situation is being compared to the situation with the chopping down of the truffula trees? What values does this story promote?

13 The Lorax 2. What is the author, Dr. Seuss, trying to tell us in this story? What does the Once-ler symbolize? What does the Lorax symbolize? Dr Seuss is trying to tell us we must be careful with our environment. We have a responsibility to protect it. Once-ler symbolizes greed Lorax symbolizes responsibility (voice for the trees)

14 3. What real life situation is being compared to the situation with the chopping down of the truffula trees? The real life situation is deforestation. Dr. Seuss warns us about the danger corporate greed poses to the environment through the actions of the Once-ler.

15 4. What values does this story promote?
The values this story promotes are responsibility and respect for our environment.

16 Read your children’s book to your partner.
Write down the title and author of your partner’s book. Write down the value that their book is promoting. What is your evidence? Write down a detail that supports that value. (could be a quote that shows a value)

Do you have any special items or heirlooms in your family that help you remember family members or your heritage?

18 As we read, The Keeping Quilt to you, write down the items mentioned in the book and what they symbolize.

19 Reflection Look over the responses on your family values worksheet.
In a one paragraph response explain what you learned about what your family members value. What do you notice? Are there similarities or differences from what you value? Explain what you discovered.

20 Exit Pass Write down the value that your book reflects.
