Environmental Impact Assessment of Steel Bridges Martin Viilep
The Swedish Institute of Steel Construction has made LCAs on steel and concrete composite road bridges in order to detect important enviromental impact parameters and to find areas where improvements are necessary.
Two of the most common bridge types were studied. Combustion engines in vehicles contribute to a big share of the airborne emission, such as CO2 abd Nox. In spite od the small amounts, alloys such as molybdenum contribute to most of the environmental burden from the materials according to one assessment method.
This puts steel in less favourable position when comparing LCA results with other materials. The concrete in steel bridges contributes too almost 50% out of the environmental impact and the fact that steel bridges need less material then concrete bridges, shows that steel bridges are good environmental choice. ???
